It was the Lexington Club. The newer owners kept the name. In the early-mid ’80s it was just an awful dive. I never spent any time there, but I did observe it was very down-and-out latino clientele with frequent police activity, pulling wasted looking dudes out in handcuffs…

I feel like there should be some way to broker a deal that allows the owners to build their condos, but keep Elbo Room on the bottom floor when the building is finished.

Kind of like the ‘deal’ with all that housing at 8th and Market – previous residents were allowed to keep their rent controlled leases at the new apartments.

And if I had my way,
Amelia’s would never have turned into the Elbo Room.
The Lexington Club would still be a skeezy heroin dive bar.
Hunt’s Donuts would be 24 hour scary.
Bruno’s would still be red velvet and naugahyde prohibition era relic.
And my rent would still be ~$200 for a San Carlos Street crash pad.

Enjoy what you have while you have it.
