Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Denver Knows What’s Up

Every now and then, pro photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s spread:

Went to Denver at the beginning of July. Ended up celebrating my birthday in the best possible way. That state know’s what’s up. Spent some time at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with Katie Conry. I’ll be shooting in San Francisco August 15th through the 20th. See you then!

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Tech Scumb

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles last year. He still comes back to SF every chance he gets, but regardless of where he shoots his rolls, it’s always a joy to get a peek inside his process with each new edition. Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s spread:

A recent roll of Kodak Gold that I had been saving. These images show the past week in San Francisco except for the final shot which is from a bar in Los Angeles. While in SF, I realized I needed to be completely alone so I walked around the old neighborhoods I used to live in. I said goodbye to so much this past time I was there. As far as “tech scumb”, I love all my friends that work in tech and wish no malice towards anyone ever.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Muses

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. He still comes back to SF every chance he gets (which is great for all of us) but regardless of where he shoots his rolls, it’s always a joy to get a peek inside his process with each new edition. Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s spread:

Beauty and muses are difficult concepts for me sometimes. Muses by their nature are not permanent so I’m constantly coming to a crossroad where people are coming and going out of my life as they please. Beauty on the other hand can be quite subjective. I’ve known many muses that desire to work with as many artists as possible so they can see all the different reflections and interpretations of themselves. On the rare occasion, I myself have been a muse for an artist. It’s rewarding and a momentary relief from the stress of work and reality.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Thrift Town

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. He still comes back to SF every chance he gets (which is great for all of us) but regardless of where he shoots his rolls, it’s always a joy to get a peek inside his process with each new edition. This edition, as you can see, finds Joshua back in SF for a spell (woohoo!):

The Thrift Town photo is purely an homage to the times I spent there looking for anything and nothing, to Teen Witch who I know loves that place. The place kind of served as a reminder that the city was slowly changing. Over the years I lived there I watched the price of thrift rise. At first slowly, then to a point where clothing and used electronics became indistinguishable in price from the antique / vintage stores in the mission. Thrift Town and stuff left out on the street by San Franciscans is how I decorated my apartments. These photos were shot over a four day trip I took to SF at the beginning of June.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: I Walk around Los Angeles

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. He still comes back to SF every chance he gets (which is great for all of us) but regardless of where he shoots his rolls, it’s always a joy to get a peek inside his process with each new edition. Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s:

Everyone spends so much time down here driving. I guess in other cities you spend the same amount of time in transit on the bus or train or whatever but I see so many people in LA driving alone. Why not carpool? I walk around Los Angeles still as often as possible, it beats going to the gym and drinking juice which is also what everyone here seems be into. Same with E-Cigs and black clothing. Most of this series was shot in or around Hollywood.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Joshua Tree and Hollywood

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s:

LA the past month has meant visiting friends all over the southern part of this state. This and the next issue are a two part series that documents travels around Joshua Tree and Hollywood with friends from the bay. The SF band Silver Shadows played a pretty cool house that was a converted church near Westlake. Been finding myself gravitating towards the long strip of Beverly Boulevard more than anywhere else in LA. Come visit, there are porches, pools and plenty of space to have friends stay over.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: I’ve Pissed off a Lot of People

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s:

I’m pretty sure I’ve pissed off a lot of people in the 26 years I’ve been around in this body. I usually look my subject in the eye before or after taking the photo so that they don’t think I’m some timid voyeur or anything like that. Otherwise, interacting with various strangers and new friends over time introduces you to some pretty wild personalities. There’s a good amount of people in these photos that I imagine won’t be talking to me anytime soon as well but every town is a small town in certain ways.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: The SF I Knew

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. He still comes back to SF every chance he gets (which is great for all of us) but regardless of where he shoots his rolls, it’s always a joy to get a peek inside his process with every new edition. Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s edition:

This Sears camera I bought for $20 at Glass Key on Haight St. has been good to me. There’s no meter though and since it’s a rangefinder I’m constantly fighting parallax. In this set I’ve included a picture of my old house on bartlett st inspired by a series my friend Diana (http://instagram.com/dirtydiana) is doing. I went to Pops for it’s last hurrah but the photobooth was already out of commission. How much more of the SF I knew will be gone when I’m there next? Please visit the booth at the Musee Mechanique for me and send me random photostrips. 1416 N. Gardner St #4 90046

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Keep Bringing Me Back (2 Year Anniversary Edition!)

For 2 years now, photographer Joshua Cobos has been doing this column for us. He shoots a roll of film, just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. He still comes back to SF every chance he gets (which is great for all of us) but regardless of where he shoots his rolls, it’s always a joy to get a peek inside his process with every new edition. Here’s to another 2 years… and another 2 after that… and on and on and on and on until we’re all dead!

And now a word from Joshua:

It’s been two years since I started this column. There are days where I feel as though nothing has changed about my life, my habits, my faults and all that. My photos remind me that I am learning though, if something doesn’t work out in one exposure I have to think about why, how for the next shot. Keep bringing me back to the bay though, save my seat at Sutro Baths while I’m gone.

Thanks for everything, Joshua! Be sure to follow him on Instagram and on Twitter.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: I’m Heading up to San Francisco this Weekend

Every now and then, the now-LA-based but still SF-devoted photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 shots and we call it “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s a message from Joshua:

I’m heading up to San Francisco this weekend for Noise Pop. Allan and I agreed to start Bad Blood during one of the shows of the weeklong fest. I remember Lizzy and I talking too loudly while Mac from Superchunk was playing ‘Driveway to Driveway’ at the Swedish American Hall. Another concertgoer sternly hushed us in a stage whisper. We had become those people at the show that talk too loud. The three of us then slunk up ashamedly to the balcony where they bought me a beer and asked about my on again off again relationship with Ashley. I was living off Mcallister then and I think about that neighborhood all the time. For now, the bay every three or four months or is almost enough to not feel too far away.

Thanks, Joshua! Glad you and Ashley are having fun down in LA! See you at Noise Pop!
