Chasms record release party tonight at subMission!

Set to be released on Dream Recordings, Chasms is “the dark, swirling project of San Francisco-based songwriter Jess Labrador. Alongside collaborator Shannon Madden, Labrador crafts mesmerizing percussive dirges carved out by damaged percussion and hypnotizing guitars. Drawing upon influences like 4AD’s 1980s roster and Creation Records shoegaze classics, Chasms douses each melancholic track with blistering heaviness, making nods to doom, drone, black metal and industrial music.”

Tonight the Mission’s only dance nite devoted to dark dirges and subaltern urges returns to Sub-mission. Here’s what they’ve got to say -

“For our April edition, Warm Leatherette is firing up its body machinery for an all-DJ night of recorded synth bedlam. Your Warm Leatherette Resident Selectors will present mixes of the finest minimal electronics and synth punk, while inviting you to gaze long and hard into the inky depths with a guest DJ set from BIXU, Chief Curator at kindred spirit party H O LES.”

As we transition from crystal based bands to marble based bands, Brooklyn’s hypnagogic heroes, Black Marble head over to Warm Leatherette tonight for some synth driven post-punk, perhaps reminiscent of SF’s early 80s Voice Farm. Catch them this evening at the SUB/Mission venue on Mission and 19th.

Here‘s a blast from before the bust of ’01. When Slanted Door used to be on Valencia and places like Mangiafuoco on Guerrero used to offer basic Italian grub and grog (“It has chianti and what else do you need in an Italian restaurant”).

Benders was Sacrifice, serving up rum ribs and voodoo pasta in a tiki setting (“Don’t ask about how this purgatorial “tiki lounge” fits in, it just does”).

Booze was referred to as liquids and Amnesia charged a whopping $2 for live shows. Over at The Uptown a good jukebox was defined as one stocked with Dylan and Morphine, but beers were $3 and the dude next to you could probably tip you off on a well priced nitrous tank.

The current de-gentrified Club Veintiséis on Mission near 26th was the gentrified 26 Mix, a “sound bar” offering up a high quality listening experience while you sipped on your suds à la Tokyo style bars which feature a premium soundsystem and choice djs.

This evening the finest synth wavey dance night in the Mission celebrates some of the Bay’s most excellent live electronic music acts. In particular, Ssleeping DesiresS and Black Jeans will be performing live tracks in celebration of the release of the new Bay Area themed Sweating Tapes cassette compilation. Doors open at 10 p.m. at the always awesome Submission space at 2183 Mission St (cross is 18th).

Relatively new pie pusher Mission Pizza has finally published their menu and boy the choices are overwhelming! Three types of Mission themed pies plus a Mexican Mariachi to boot. Somehow though they’ve amazingly been able to procure all toppings at the same cost. No matter your slice, you pay the same price! The only variable in price seems to be pie size. Any theories as to this egalitarian pricing scheme?

The bánh mì-nification of the Mission continues, as this recent upstart at 2788 Mission Street near 24th Street BART pops up seemingly overnight. Formerly known as Mission Sub, this new Quickly USA venture aims to please, with a 3 for $10 deal. However, not everyone thinks this deal is worth going for, considering the newly opened swank Saigon sub setup at Duc Loi six blocks down Mission Street. Who will prevail in the bánh mì battle?
