San Francisco’s “Swan” (or sometimes “Birdman”) can most often be found feeding the pigeons at 16th and Mission. Where he’s been hanging out and selling his daily newsletter’s for the last decade. Though he’s usually by himself, there’s been another dude that’s been joining him for about an hour a day to feed the pigeons. The two don’t talk much to each other, in fact I don’t think they even know each other’s names, though you can find them sitting by each other around noon at the 16th st BART.

If you see Swan, please consider donating a couple bucks for his most recent newsletter (or “rag” as he calls it), which features his own drawings, poetry, and ramblings.

It’s small, has a wide lens, and the most subtle stereoscopic lens distance of any other digital camera at the moment. It’s nice to have a pocket sized camera to carry around the neighborhood again. If you don’t mind having the menu in Japanese, you can also grab an Olympus 3D1 here for a hundred bucks less. Since the UI is mostly symbols, it’s not that difficult to navigate either way. Speaking of money saving tips: the $15 haircuts at Lee Hong on 16th (in the above photo) are a hell of a deal.

Film is temperamental. Old cameras can be too. I’ve been shooting on my Nimslo 3D camera long enough to have a decent pile of fuck-ups, but accidents and film aren’t always bad thing. Some of these shots had something wrong happen in developing, others were the result of the film not properly advancing. I hated them when checking them out through the loupe, but found that when I turned them into animations (the Nimslo shots 4 side by side shots at the same time), they took on a life of their own.

There’s been a growing pile of not-yet-scanned 35mm film piling up in the corner of my studio. As I finally began the lengthy process of scanning and editing, I was instantly taken back to the one good rainy weekend we had this season. Wandering in the rain with my Nimslo 3D camera, stepping over discarded umbrellas, hanging out by Yamo watching the can-kicking-dude nail a trick shot, and trying to capture the rare SF lightning storm. Good times.

Every time my wife brings her car to Mission Tires, I love to tag along. They have one of those electronic massage chairs, like you see in airports, but these are free. So I bring a couple comics along and spend an hour or two reading in the fancy chair. Last time we were there, I spotted this guy (in the pic above) going for a more old school reading position. I guess the chair was already occupied.

These shots were all taken with a Lumix G camera with a 3D lens. I planned on doing these 3D City posts mainly with film, but I thought I could try out a digital camera sometime too. Turns out I didn’t like it. The shots are crisp, and I love doing landscape orientation instead of portrait, but I really prefer the smooth animation you get using 4 frames (like on my Nimslo) rather than just 2.
