Another rainy weekend. Another batch of rainy day wigglegrams. (Ilford film shot on my Nimlso 3D cam)

My morning walk from the Mission to downtown is one of my favorite rituals. When shooting photos along the way, this walk takes about 30 minutes. Unless it’s raining, then I’ll be out for hours.

This batch was shot on my Nimslo 3D with a roll of Ilford HP5 (my default “foggy day” film) on a recent rainy morning, then dropped off at Photoworks on the walk back home where I’ll load up film for the next day’s walk.

Just outside of Tiburon is an amazing little hike along the Ring Mountain Open Space Reserve. A fantastic view of the bay, Mt Tam, and SF. Be sure to bring your climbing shoes and a roll of redscale film if you have it. It’d play nice with the colors you’d find there this time of year.

It’s possible I eat at Rice Paper Scissors a little too often. At least that’s the thought that occurred to me when I realized I had so many unpublished wigglegrams from their new location (in Brick and Mortar Music Hall). I’m a sucker for their Goi Ga chicken salad sandwich… and their grilled steak banh mi.

Along with the typical Wachoski and hunky Jesus spottings, you’re likely to spot these acrobats doing their thing in Dolores Park once or twice a week. For the night is dark and full of glowy things… sorry, I’m still in character from that Game of Thrones prom thing at the Armory on Saturday. I’ve been bringing my Lumix 3D camera out on rainy nights and capturing neon signs and fire spinners around the city.

Every time my wife brings her car to Mission Tires, I love to tag along. They have one of those electronic massage chairs, like you see in airports, but these are free. So I bring a couple comics along and spend an hour or two reading in the fancy chair. Last time we were there, I spotted this guy (in the pic above) going for a more old school reading position. I guess the chair was already occupied.

These shots were all taken with a Lumix G camera with a 3D lens. I planned on doing these 3D City posts mainly with film, but I thought I could try out a digital camera sometime too. Turns out I didn’t like it. The shots are crisp, and I love doing landscape orientation instead of portrait, but I really prefer the smooth animation you get using 4 frames (like on my Nimslo) rather than just 2.

I brought an old Image Tech 3D camera along on a recent walk from the Mission to North Beach. It’s a small cheap camera with 3 side by side lenses (one less than my my favorite Nimslo cam). It was fun to shoot with, but I’ll probably just stick with my Nimslo. The doggy in the top shot was spotted at Al’s Attire in North Beach. One of my favorite shops to visit when in North Beach.

Another Valentine’s Day, another massive Pillow Fight in Justin Herman Plaza. This year I brought my Nimslo camera and a roll of Fuji’s 800 ISO film. These explosions of feathers and streaks of light are what I came back with. Since this is my fifth installment of 3D City, I’ve also attached a little bonus image at the bottom. It’s an unedited scan, so you can see how the shots look straight off my camera.

And here’s an un-edited scan from my Nimslo. As you can see, it takes 4 side by side shots simultaneously, which I line up and turn into animated gifs. Every 3D pic on a Nimlso camera takes up the space of 2 normal 35mm shots (using 4 half frame shots). I’m working on making a little how-to video for aspiring 3D photogs too, if anyone is interested. As I mentioned before, this is my 5th column in this year long project, so I’ve decided to launch a small Patreon to help cover the cost of film. One rainy Sunday I headed down to Dolores to watch the ceremonial blessing of the Doggie Diner Heads. On hand for the event where Sister Dana Van Iquity (from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence), Ed Holmes, John Law, and a small crowd of dog lovers.

These shots were taken on my Nimslo using Ilford HP5 film. Aside from this small gathering, I had previously spent a sunny day following the Doggies around San Francisco. You can see those shots here.

Crooked rain, fine grains. I’ve been taking advantage of these wet days as a chance to break in my new Nimslo 3D camera.

I had always thought the Nimslo was just another cheap stereoscopic camera, but these things actually have some decent glass on them. The lens is 30mm, nice and wide, and the body is built like a tank. I shot this batch with a roll of Ilford HP5 film. I’m usually a sucker for grainier film, but I think the Ilford might be the perfect fit for the Nimslo. I don’t mean to geek out… I’m just digging this new camera. Luckily they’re still pretty cheap on eBay.

Film photography & gifs have a lot of common. Graininess, sure, they both have that in spades, but they’re also underdog formats. There are easier ways to capture a moment, and less bloated ways to make that moment move again, but these media just doesn’t know when to quit, and that’s why I find them so charming.

I was telling Allan about my transition from smartphones to film cameras, and my current obsession of mixing digital/analog together. He offered to let me share my year long 3D City project here on Mission Mission. Each week I’ll share some new work along with little bits of info on the camera and film I used (for the photo nerds out there). These shots are from a roll of Arista Premium (a Tri-X knockoff) on my Nishika N8000.

And here’s a version aligned by bike. (Might be a bit jumpy for some — I suggested starting at the front wheel.)
