With 22 days left, Mission Street Food hit their $10,000 investment goal. Looks like their full-time charitable restaurant is going to become a reality! Congrats to Anthony Myint.

The $10,00 goes to their initial equipment purchases, but they could still use more support and you can still donate through kickstarter. Your donation goes towards a gift certificate at the restaurant when it opens.

You guys remember Food Not Bombs, right?  They were those folks who were always getting kicked out of People’s Park or arrested for feeding homeless people.  You know, domestic terrorism or some shit like that.

Well, now you can experience all that edgy activism yourself without having to listen to a Fifteen album because Mission Street Food is hosting Vegan Night for Food Not Bombs at the usual spot, Lung Shan Restaurant at 2234 Mission.  Everything is between $5-9.  Leave your cynicism at the door for an evening!  PS.  I think they are still taking donations . . .

Some Highlights:

cassava fritters and panisse cakes with guacamole – $8
roasted kale, king trumpet, fried nagaimo, braised cashews, shallot soubise – $9
black garlic stuffed tofu, beluga lentils, wild arugula, preserved lemon – $8.5

Oh, and for a little extra credit, be sure to check out the Cometbus art exhibit at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records in Oakland.  Nobody does art with a Xerox machine that was kicked down three flights of stairs better!

As you heard last week, Mission Street Food is working on moving out of their oh-so-classy classy Lung Shan digs and becoming a full-time non-profit restaurant. Their initial $500 investment option was a bit steep for most folks, so they moved over to the kickstarter.com model which allows you to donate arbitrary amounts of money anywhere from $1 and up.

If you donate $50 and up you get a gift certificate to the restaurant for that amount, so it practically pays for itself if you were planning on going there anyway. More details on their blog or just hop over to kickstarter page here. They have to reach their $10,000 goal before May 5th for the funding to happen.

I thought you should know about our latest story that goes behind the scenes of Mission Street Food, which I know you are familiar with by now. In the video, we not only try to capture what the MSF events are all about, but also visit a couple charitable organizations to see how money donated from the event is being used to benefit the community. Finally, we take a look at how MSF’s charitable model might be replicated in a neighborhood near you, or even elsewhere in the country.

I know Kevin already posted about this, but I had to chime in for the meat eaters. My environmentally unsound beef burger was also amazingly delicious. The salty, greasy juiciness of the thing was astounding. I kind of think if I ate more than one a week my health would go south pretty fast. But for a Sunday at noon, it was great.

My burger is the one at the bottom of the frame. Kevin and Allan’s are vegan.
