The following BREAKING PIZZA NEWS comes courtesy of MM reader Jason K:

Pizza Di Mano (3331 24th Street) is closing on May 25th.

New owners, Popo’s Pizza and Brew, will take over immediately thereafter. Popo’s is the same owner as the former West Oakland location. He’ll be serving unique pizzas (Mango Prosciutto for one!), BBQ Ribs, Rotisserie Chicken and they will be brewing their own beer.They will re-open on June 1st.

I for one was never a fan of pizza from poor Pizza Di Mano, despite my initial hopes back when they opened over two years ago.  Even multiple Jamesons across the street at the Attic weren’t enough to sway me once I had tasted the uninspired pie.  While this new place doesn’t appear to be offering slices and consequently won’t be challenging Arinell for the best slice in SF crown, perhaps they can offer Serrano’s some healthy competition. Because everyone knows you can never have too many pizza places in the Mission!

What happens when the rock & roll pizza slingers at Arinell win a $25 lotto scratcher?  Well, if this past Saturday night is any indication, this calls for celebration in the form of a 15-minute booze break!  It was mildly excruciating to see that whole pizza just laying there waiting to be eaten while we were locked out of the shop, but it was well worth it to see the boys in such rare form when they returned, hi-fiving patrons and generally having a merry old time.

Wait a minute, do I really want my pizza slingers hi-fiving patrons?

Breaking Pizza News at Arinell

Whenever someone asks me where to find the best pizza in the city, I always just simply say Arinell.  When it comes to proper zest and sourness of the sauce, appropriate reservation of cheese allotment, perfect texture and crispness of crust, timeliness of service, and fair pricing, Arinell proves adept mastery of all categories.

The only area fit for improvement was accessibility, as the pizza maestros were only open until 10pm on weekdays and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.  Well, no longer.

Arinell is now open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, as proudly proclaimed on their new vinyl sign.  Look for neighboring  Thrill of the Grill to go out of business within the next month.

Mission Loc@l posted a video (well, audio slideshow, really) behind the scenes at Arinell.

If you’re still on Windows 95, here’s the gist: employee Neil Aviles talks about eating “tons” of pizza (“like 3 slices… in 4 hours”… I’m pretty sure Andrew Sarkarati has broken that record), dudes passing out in the store, failed crank deals, mission gentrification, and yuppies.

Oh no he didn’t just drop the Y-bomb! Careful Neil… I got in trouble for that this week.
