You know him, you love him: he’s Tag Savage of Sexpigeon. Lots of his early work was set in the Mission, and I for one am forever indebted to him for teaching me to see the world (and Tumblr) in new and exciting ways. (Also, he designed the Mission Mission logo and most of the custom graphics in the sidebar, and I think I’m still actually technically financially indebted to him for all of that. Thanks again, Taggo!)

Anyway, finally, somebody took the time to make a movie about him and his awesome blog. Be sure to stay tuned ’til the very end:

First up is a music video made with youth from City of Dreams, a non-profit based out of the Oakdale neighborhood in Hunters Point. The video was organized by BAYCAT, produced by Zara Ahmed and Katie Cruz and was directed by the youth for a new song by Trackademicks featuring Lyrics Born. Yep, Lyrics Born. I was out when the video was shot and I’m still bummed about it.

Next up, “Looking For”, was produced by the Music Production class with Evan Adams. The youth wrote the lyrics and produced the beats, and the filmmaking class shot the video in Potrero Hill, again with Zara Ahmed and Katie Cruz. The song and video are part of the 25th episode of their show, Zoom In. This one is about the 2012 Election. You may notice the personas they chose for themselves in the video: the goth, the nerd, the hipster and the student.

As we mentioned last week, the final installment of Vice TV’s Fresh off the Boat: Bay Area series involves burritos. Vice TV’s Eddie Huang concludes his Bay Area tour by sampling several of our unofficial official local dish, comparing them to Asian food, and crowning a favorite. I wish he would have sampled more burritos, but let’s be real, burritos are huge, how many could one possibly eat in a day?

The gals from Rice Paper Scissors showed Vice TV’s Eddie Huang around a few Mission locations recently, namely Duc Loi Supermarket and and Sun Fat Seafood.

He ranted a bit about the state of Asian food appreciation in the United States, then they grilled a bunch of shelled and tentacled creatures on the street while sitting in their signature plastic red stools. The food wasn’t served up with one of RPS’s controversial $4 artisanal smoothie shots, but rather with a Tecate topped off with a ring of Sriracha around it’s mouth. How’s that for fusion cuisine?

It’s cool to see the presence of Mission Asian businesses getting a nod. Which, in my opinion, is an often overlooked aspect of the ‘hood.

Box Wars is an annual tradition in Dolores Park during which a bunch of folks make armor and weapons out of cardboard and proceed beat each other up in the name of recycling awareness (I think).

However, this one began a bit differently than the others… with a marriage proposal! After all, what’s more romantic than asking someone to marry you before clubbing them with a sword made out of toilet paper tubes? Here’s a vid:

Good for them, but we gotta know: was the ring made of cardboard? Because, you know, papercuts.

Local singer/songwriter Wolf Larsen teamed up with Mission filmmaker Pete Lee, Viracocha, and what looks like the mysterious silhouettes of the Patzner bros for her latest music video. It was filmed within the reclaimed-wood walls of Viracocha with little/no budget. If watching a graceful modern dancer caress vintage typewriters to ethereal breakup music is your thing, you’ll love it. You will probably like it anyway. NPR did.

Wolf’s alter ego, Sarah Ramey, happens to be a fascinating person. She was the personal blogger of the Obama campaign in 2008 and is currently writing a book “The Lady’s Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness” which probably has to do with her struggle with an illness that’s been keeping her in treatment in Washington D.C.

Also, check out Pete Lee’s stuff if you haven’t already. He recently did a crazy martial arts music video for Aesop Rock.

Not sure if you’ve seen this already, but let this stand as testament to how much cyclists care about their bicycles and just how far they’ll go to recover their rides.  Check out the whole thing either here or below:

Two things about this:

1) When our protagonist attempts to make a citizen arrest, he doesn’t tackle the guy as an overzealous I may have done in that situation.  He keeps his cool and keeps documenting.

2) I’m totally wearing my lucky hat tomorrow.  And I’m never ever wearing a black shirt with green stripes.

Also, don’t forget to write down your bike’s serial number, which is the only way you can really prove that you’re its rightful owner.  And not on your wrist!  Save that for show stamps and slap bracelets!

You might have heard that they had all of their laptops stolen a couple weeks ago, along with a lot of their work. We have an Indigogo campaign going to replace their equipment, and have been really touched with the support. They came back together and re-did the lost work, look for more of it rolling out over the net few weeks on the BAYCAT YouTube channel.

Reader David Gallagher of the Western Neighborhoods Project sent us these 1985 videos of a young Mr. Lucky interviewing some inebriated patrons of  Original McCarthy’s, which you may now know as Cha Cha Cha. Original McCarthy’s opened on Mission street in June of 1933.

Nothing too exciting in the videos, but it’s an interesting snapshot of the era. Before the Mission was known as a Mexican neighborhood, it was largely populated by German and Irish immigrants until the ’60s. McCarthy’s was one of the last original Irish bars in the Mission. Even at the time of filming this, McCarthy himself remarks, “I’m close to 70. It’s about time to clock out.”

The interviewer, Mr. Lucky, still croons around town with his retro-jazz group the Cocktail Party. You can catch him at the Lucky Horseshoe in early August.

Our pal Mills captured this video last night, of a MUNI driver fearlessly steering around a neighborhood fireworks show. The video also features dogs barking, Mills screaming, and a healthy amount of pyrotechnics. Woo America!
