Toyota sandwich

Mission Local came upon this scene just now but doesn’t yet know what happened. [link]

UPDATE: Our own resident vegan Caroline was on the scene!

I was on the scene! Heard an explanation from the guy who caught the person responsible.

In short:
The guy in the white pickup truck creamed the parked Toyota into the phone pole, clipping another nearby parked nearby on the way. He hopped out of the car and booked it on foot, but a 19th street resident watched the whole thing happen from his window and chased down the driver.

He caught the guy as he was getting on the #33 bus, held up the bus driver, and apprised the driver. There happened to be some undercover cops nearby who showed up and caught the driver.

I got there about a half-hour later when the 19th street resident was back on the scene taking a photo of the aftermath as a memento.

(I didn’t have my phone with me or I would have provided more photos of my own.)

Realized this sentence is confusing:
He caught the guy as he was getting on the #33 bus, held up the bus driver, and apprised the driver.

means:
19th st resident caught the hit-and-run driver as he was getting on the #33, and the resident asked the bus driver to stop the bus so the cops could catch the hit-and-run driver.

Couple follow ups: Everyone seems upset about the guy who left, but was he the driver? Or just a day-laborer passenger? Was the teal t-shirt guy the driver? Where was the driver of the sedan (looks like s/he might need medical help). Was there anyone in the third car on the other side of Lapidge?

And regarding the “barrio” comment, 19th and Lapidge is less barrio than it is tech bedroom community.

No one was in the Sedan. At the beginning of the vid you can see the dude switch from the driver seat to the passenger seat before he gets out and runs for his life, all of which makes it seem like he was the driver. Although the video doesn’t actually show him driving, so we can’t say for sure. Hopefully the dude that caught up with him witnessed him driving the truck.

        Lyle,
So, the “guy” who left WAS the person driving, as we witnessed from our window…we watched him flee, so I left my apt. and actually pursued him out of my front door and caught him on the bus thanks to people on the street answering my questions as I ran.
I stopped the bus and boarded and I identified him and two undercover cops who had followed me on the bus and then arrested him. No on was hurt luckily, but mi esposa y yo are from SF born and raised and regardless of who it was, (yes he was an established “day laborer”; you don’t hit and run! What kills me is that no one did anything…they were too busy standing there with their “I” Phones:photo and video…ultimately passive/distracted…just standing there!
In retrospect, I’m glad I caught him. Next time folks, please don’t just stand there with your I Phone! Take action on crimes….muggings, murder, hit and runs…next time do something. It’s a shame that this man had nothing to loose at the scene, but everything to loose by getting caught! We must find a way in California especially, to allow Mexican citizens to work safely here.

Interesting mentality on the part of the video shooter. “Hmmm, driver is running away, guess I’ll just turn the other way and shoot video of the truck…”

      Exactly.

The guy in the PG&E shirt was letting the “runner” (dude who ran away from the scene) drive the truck. You can hear him say why in the video, but only like 5 seconds is audible.

I was coming up Valencia (south) and I heard tires squealing then a lot of metal crunching, turned down Lapidge and saw the guy in teal running next to the truck. Got out the iPhone and started filming.

Nobody was in either of the cars you saw damaged in the video, but damn he made quite a mess. Police have the video already and it’s clear enough that you can see exactly what happened.

Hi neighbors- I’m the owner of the Toyota Matrix that was hit first. Can’t thank you enough for the video, whomever shot it! Very helpful. And soooo lucky that not a single person was hurt in this nightmare. Now on to deal with all the insurance, but happy I have it. Thanks again.
