Adios, 12 Galaxies

We asked Rhiannon to fill us in on what went down at 12 Galaxies’ swan-song show:

All space metaphors aside, 12 Galaxies went out with a big bang last night. StitchCraft opened the show up, all beautiful harmonies and hot chick with a fiddle, and there went beer one. After that it just got louder and sillier and more fun. During Big Light’s first set, the place got really packed, and really really hot, but no one cared. The Mikes and Willy at the door were having a great time, while Robert was shmoozing and dancing and answering the same questions a million times over. Someone whose face was a blur got up and played an acoustic set. (Their face probably wasn’t a blur in reality, but I was three beers in, not to mention the three margaritas at Velvet Cantina during dinner beforehand.) Then Big Light was on again, and someone had turned the amps up to 11. After that, it just became a jam fest. I got some video of some 10 people on stage, tearing the guitars apart, shouting “12 GALAXIES!” in some kind of rhythm, Robert got up and sang, first the 12 Galaxies song they were all making up, then some Grateful Dead-type stuff…

It was awesome, I left around 3, after KrOB put his famous neon sign in a cab and headed on home.

Thanks, Rhiannon! Can’t wait to see the video…

  1. [...] So long, farewell, etc. to 12 Galaxies, the Mission club that took its name from an old Frank Chu sign (I think he’s up to a few billion galaxies now). The club went out with a hot, sweaty bang complete with an appearance by Mr. Chu himself. [...]

As a booking agent who brought some of the first national touring acts to 12 Galaxies, it is with a heavy heart to see this place go. I hope San Francisco knows what a shame this is, and 12 Galaxies, you will be sorely missed!

May I be the first to put forward the idea of a conspiracy to shut down 12 Galaxies? Just follow along here a second.

Anybody remember Grasshopper Alec Kaplan? He ran for mayor last Novemeber and was perhaps one of the wackiest guys ever to run in this town, and that’s saying something. He ran an unsanctioned taxicab from his own car, which he also happened to live out of (from everything I’ve heard, also one of the wackiest cabbies ever). But now, does anybody remember the “don’t get taken for an ILLEGAL ride” campaign? Well, that was aimed at people just like Grasshopper. My pet theory is that it *was* aimed at him. He made Newsom look ridiculous at the debate, sharing a stage with a weirdo making goofball eyes while Mr. Rubberhair is trying to defend surveillance cameras.

It’s not that hard to imagine vengeance wrought on other candidates. Chicken John’s “Ask Dr. Hal” show has been held at 12 Galaxies ever since he sold his own bar. It was his main soapbox during the election, and Chicken even held his Loser’s Ball there. How hard would it be for a mayor to communicate to his vice cops the fact that, hey, this place needs more surprise inspections? Or to persuade underagers to try and get in? Or to tell them both to do it on the same nights? The PLOT SICKENS.

    Here’s things I haven’t researched:

    1) If, as rumor has it, 12 Galaxies financial burdens were because of underage drinking fines
    2) If the mayor has any real control over vice inspections
    3) If Grasshopper is actually his real name
