Giving so much attention to graffiti only encourages it. I am tired of having to paint over graffiti and seeing it everywhere in the Mission. It may be cool to you, but for those of us who grew up here, it is really annoying.

this comment will meet with a lot of ire on the ol’ mm blog. lots of people really love the “street art”.

    here’s my question:

    is there a difference between

the ribity everyone loves, or this, which i would say is more than just a “tag”, both on more or less innocuous, uninhabited buildings…

and the dudes “orfn” and “spray” putting GIANT one-word, non-artistic tags on the side of Ali Baba’s on 19th street?

i’m not even getting into the whole tags-as-gang-culture issue, or any of that crap. my guess is, all of the above (orfn, spray, girafa, ribity, sad jose, etc) are done by hipster dudes who live in the hood. whatever.

is there a difference? and if so, what is it?

Great. More pictures of crappy graffiti that someone will have to spend time and money to paint over. That “street artists” feel entitled to damage other’s property just shows how shallow they are. Why anybody thinks that the crap that they spray paint on walls in any way enhances the Mission is beyond me.

If I catch you painting on my house, I will beat you with a pipe I have by the front door, with a particular emphasis on your hands….

  5. mission born and raised says:

I hate the graffiti on the MM header. It is ugly.

  6. Milk&Cheese says:

Man, you guys are crybabies. Go live in some tract housing if it bothers you that much.

  7. Tad Benton says:

People, people. You are fussing about the cutest little graffiti in the city.

  8. SFDoggy says:

@M&C: Nobody is crying; we are just stating our opinions. If it bothers you that much then don’t read our comments. On the other hand, if you actually have something to add to the dialogue, say it. Rude, dismissive comments say more about you than the other commentors.

  9. mission born and raised says:

    @M&C,

Just cause I hate graffiti does not mean I do not enjoy living in the city.

  10. StacycatS says:

Times Square got a facelift in the 80s… now look at it! Disneyland in NYC!

    On the other hand…

I do feel sorry for the peoples in the corrugated metal house on Capp St, though. They are *always* out there scrubbing off the spray paint.

  11. Mel says:

23rd between Capp and South Van Ness is a mess right now. The post office is a frequent target. But a couple of apartment buildings are covered in spray paint right now.
