Burning Gutters

(still from "Fire in the street spreads to parked cars.")

Sunday night around midnight someone lit the northside gutter between Mission and San Carlos streets on fire. At least two cars parked along the block were caught in the blaze. A third car pulled out from behind them before the fire spread, as seen here.

I came along after the flames had been put out and the two cars were pretty much melted into the sidewalk on their right sides. Since my camera’s in the shop I had no proof until Void (winner of our science themed music video contest) sent us this video by “northofsouthofmarket“.

The owners of the car in front, a middle aged male and female couple talking to each other in Spanish, stood and stared at the melted mess. I asked them what had happened and the man told me that “somebody with nothing better to do came here and lit a fire.”

Is this the work of the “carsonist” we’ve heard so much about? Or just some wanna be burner who missed the last bus to the playa? Either way, not cool, bro.

  1. Jesus! Any idea what they put in the gutter to burn? Gasoline?

  2. no.thanks. says:

call me an asshole but i think that if you can calmly stand there and shoot the fucking thing then you can sure grab a bucket and some friends to put out the fire. its not like its a robbery or a beating thats going down, i think that its ok to get involved from time to time. this is your neighborhood too.

“Grab a bucket” to put out a gasoline fire? That’s a good way to splash burning gasoline all over your clothes and become a victim of the fire yourself. No, anyone witnessing this should heed the advice of the fire department: call 911 and STAY BACK FROM THE FIRE.

Personally, I don’t care if people film it, as long as they stay out of the way.

I wish I were a fireman, ’cause then I’d fire all of you (except the Eskimos because come on, that’s racist).

It would have been pretty awesome if some do-gooder with a bucket of water had sent a stream of burning gasoline further down the block and underneat a bunch more parked cars.

That intersection is covered with SFPD cameras.

That fire is dangerously close to Yamo. If any arsonist ever impeded our ability to procure cheap tasty curry from there, thousands of people might form a legitimate angry mob, pitchforks and all.

  8. Almostnative says:

Is that a performance piece from Burning Man?

  9. Gutters says:

I guess that’s one way of cleaning the gutters. I don’t think that would work well on a house, but maybe it would help in the streets.
