Anti-Porn Bias Costs Kink Cash

Violet Blue at the SF Appeal today outlines how a recent piece by Matt Smith at SF Weekly is unbalanced and irresponsible, and responsible for a loss of funding at neighborhood business Kink.com.

Blue, in addition to asserting that the Weekly might should be lumped in with mainstream media, offers testimony from parties in the kink community offended by Smith’s slant:

Lorelei Lee responded to Smith’s accusations saying, “Mr. Smith’s repeated use of the terms ‘torture’ and ‘impalement’ to describe BDSM and dildo play demonstrates a total lack of understanding for the respectful, consensual, pre-negotiated, intimate, and often-joyful interaction that is BDSM.”

This is one of these love-that-dares-not-speak-its-name-won’t-shut-the-hell-up deals. There is truly nothing more boring than people with outre sexual preferences going on and on about how awesome they are and how great it is to have powertools shoved up the jacksie.

But, all that notwithstanding, this is taxpayers money you want. I don’t want you to have it.

It really does suck for Kink that they got their access to ETP cut off. But if we’re going to get mad at anyone, let’s get mad at the state for making up arbitrary, punishing, possibly-unconstitutional rules. Matt really doesn’t strike me as the worst of the bad guys here.

SF Weekly is out of control…a few months ago, they were also outraged about “transgender Latina hookers in S.F. successfully fighting deportation by asking for asylum.”

  4. 26thStreet says:

Isn’t it awesome how the Weekly lets writers trash a totally legitimate sexual practice (to the point of costing a valuable neighborhood business its funding) yet they proudly host Savage Love and a bunch of hooker ads in the back?
I thought that obvious hypocrisy in journalism was supposed to be BAD…so why is everyone letting this painfully uninformed piece of garbage spoil a good company’s training program?

  5. jimbeam says:

Why shouldn’t taxpayers pay for a job training program at a production company that happens to make porn? They’d pay for it at any other video production company.

Do we really want the masses to decide these sorts of things?

I was going to say “What’s got up Matt Smith’s ass?” but then realized: Nothing. Ever. Poor guy.
