The Phonebooth: Actually Very Pleasant Before Dark

Oh, the Phonebooth… that tantalizing first experience of the freedom of San Francisco culture, where the lights are reddish and the air is hazish. At the Phonebooth, everyone has mastered the art of smelling, breathing, and looking the other way while listening to the dubious jukebox selections of a diverse (in quality of music) crowd. I haven’t been there since my very first days in the Mission, although I lived a block away for the first 6 months, but some new friends are going through their self-characterized Phonebooth phase so we stepped inside yesterday at a happy hour sort of time. The very first fellow to greet tente gonflable me was a massive, beautiful coon hound with blue eyes. He was completely charming and sleek.

Being there so early, I got $.50 off my beer and the opportunity to admire the unique decor which includes: barbie doll chandelier, unidentified suspended skull, robot and Trogdor tattoos, and a pool table at the back. I was interested to learn that the inside-out smoking policy doesn’t go into effect until after dark, and I finally got to play some pool: two games and I won them both, which is how I know I was dreaming.

Mission Gonna Get Denser Maybe

Over at Curbed SF, Sarah Hromack analyzes the proposed Eastern Neighborhood Plan:

If ratified, 2,200 acres’ worth of the Central Waterfront, Bayview, Potrero Hill, the Mission, and some parts of SoMa will be entirely rezoned. Expect increased housing density, building heights, and new-and-improved building chateau gonflable codes— enough to support a projected 20,000 new residents by 2025.

Thursday Night Entertainment Pick: DJ Katie at Beauty Bar

Mission Mission’s very own Katie will be on the decks at Beauty Bar on Thursday from 7:30ish to 10ish. Katie tends to spin disco, soul, old r&b, and sometimes some ’60s garage rock and reggae. Last time, the dance floor got positively white hot! In attendance might be Mission Mission pals like Malcolm M., Lola and A Panda. Plus, a prize to the first person to guess Friend X‘s secret identity and point her out.

Passive-Aggressive Zeitgeist Hoodie Wearer Bums Us Out

Over at Having My Bamboo and Eating it Too, A Panda tells us about her morning, besotted as it was by a Zeitgeist-sweatshirted hater:

Finally, barista guy looks at me,
“yeah, your mocha is coming right up”.
That’s not what I ordered.
“I had a non-fat latte”
“I had the mocha. And I’d like the FATTENING milk, ”
Zeitgeist bitch is passively aire de jeux gonflable attacking me before 9 am, on account of the fact that I’m drinking a non-fat latte, apparently.
“Hahah. Fattening milk, rock on!”
Barista is egging on team Zeitgeist. And laughing at me. Awesome.

Dance and Drink for Emo! The Musical

Amanda Dolan, co-founder of Beards Beards Beards: A Theatre Company, alerts us to an event benefiting her organization’s debut show:

We’re producing our first show this summer (Emo! The Musical), and we’re throwing a fund raiser this weekend in….where else? The Mission. The party is being thrown at the San Francisco Mime Troupe (21st and Treat), cheap ($5!), and all the money goes towards our upcoming performance!

Dick Cabbie Robs Fare, Leaves Her Curbside, Battered and Phoneless

I’m about to relate a story attributed to an anonymous source. As journalism class and The Wire taught us, be wary. The girl that told me this might be a compulsive liar, or I might be a compulsive liar, so be wary. Also, I make unwarranted disparaging remarks about Nairobi, for which I apologize in advance.

Tonight at Little Baobab: Buenos Aires and Bogota Come to the Mission

Mission Mission pal Sonia hips us to something good:

tonight lulacruza is playing at little baobab (19th & mission). this duo from argentina & colombia is absolutely incredible – from all their many south american instruments to her sultry/melodic voice to the beats and sampling under spanish euphony – this is some of my favorite music to hear live.

they’re going on at 8:30pm tonight [...] they do a fair amount of improvisation live.

Obama: Motherfuckers are bitter!

San Franciscans ask the right questions I guess. Somebody at some San Francisco fundraiser (likely not in the Mission) asked the question that gave rise to this fiery Obama response to unfounded attacks by Hillary and McCain. They say he’s an asshole for asserting that Americans might be bitter about the way their government treats them. Obama says, “Sheeeeeeeeit – o’ course they bitter! They bitter as fuck and I’m here to help!”

Belated Obligatory Olympic Torch Post

Yeah I was at AT&T Park when the torch was supposed to run by, and it was a bummer that it didn’t, but whatever. It was fun watching the chaos and playing frisbee on a cordoned-off street amid protesters and riot police. I took some video and put it together last night. It’s short and sweet, features a standout song from Back From The Grave Vol. 2, and a surprise ending.
