Body Count Rises While Police Resources Continue to be Devoted to Dolores Park

The twitternets are blowing up with reports that there was just another fatal shooting double homicide at 24th and Hampshire.  It is time we get our priorities straight.

Update: More details.

    It’s SFPD, not Batman.

  2. EK says:

This is insane. The police even had a mobile unit set up at 24th and Folsom all today. Apparently it’s not much of a deterrent.

It’s kind of lame to equate the drinking at Dolores Park to what is probably gang or drug related activities. Let’s stop blaming the cops already. Should be the other way around: why are there so many in this community so devoted to protecting public drinking in the park and not organizing against the gangs, taggers and other petty criminals?

    • I’m not blaming the cops. The cops follow their orders from the top, who are pressured by politicians who are pressured by constituents. It’s sad that police are having their time wasted by being ordered to increase patrols of a relatively peaceful place.

Clearly keeping police resources on the streets will never stop crime, but it’s a start.

Maybe if people would just mellow out in our community and learn to get along, there would be less violence.

Besides, calling the cops every time some kids are drinking in the park really does waste an incredible amount of resources in our local police station. IMO we should just make public intoxication legal and deal with the real problems.

Do we know the motives behind either of these recent 24th st shootings?

  5. This shooting could not have been prevented by more foot/auto patrols in the Mission. 2 rival gangs will shoot each other as long as a cop isn’t within eyesight. By the logic of the writer of the post, the cops should just stake out every corner in the Mission all day/night to make sure nothing happens. Meanwhile, an armed robbery in the Noe Valley escalates into violence and an auto-pedestrian in the Castro turns deadly because they get slow responses.

Guero above said it best: “Why are there so many in this community so devoted to protecting public drinking in the park and not organizing against the gangs, taggers and other petty criminals?”

guero taking over where zin zin left off defending the cops… Look the cops are lame the gangs are dangerous. No one who has spent time observing the cops could defend them. Cops are not doing their job. And there is more blame to go around, Tacchini, useless, Kamala Harris, useless, Gavin Newsom, useless, Campos, fucking A+ useless.

Oh and while my ardor is up where the fuck is the hope and change Barack? Continued illegal spying, check, continued renditions, check, questionable signing statements, check, pass to torturers, check, escalation in Afghanistan, check, give away to wall street, check, screw middle class homeowners, check, give away to health insurers, check. Oh wait a positive net neutrality stance and a decidedly centrist supreme court justice, whoo hoo, I’m feeling Pepsi.

  7. PaddyW says:

It’s criminals shooting criminals. Tell me again how that’s a bad thing?

  8. guero says:

@NEO – yeah. Maybe I do sound like zinzin but that’s ok because I did agree with just about everything he said. And though I stand by the cops not being responsible for these incidents, I agree with you that SFPD needs serious fixing (hopefully Gascon will do the job) and I agree with you 100% about Kamila Harris, Gavin Newson and Campos – but also add the rest of the activist Supervisors to the list.

As for the cops, they know who the players are but the often can’t do anything about it. Like a family friend’s husband who was shot while trying to break up a fight some years ago – the cops knew that some 15 year old from the 26th St projects pulled the trigger but no one was willing to testify. This kid walked around with everyone knowing what he did and just laughed cause they couldn’t touch him. And the only reason the Mission was quiet for as long as it has been, was because the Feds got involved and took action while Campos was up in arms about the whole thing.

@Paddy – I’m still not clear if all the victims were really criminals. I think we need to learn more. I know a lot people who knew one of the victims and I have my doubts as to how much he was involved.
