Sunday May 31, Lincart Gallery hosts a fundraiser for a new movie by Miles Montalbano, director of Revolution Summer (set in the Mission) and the Jonathan Richman concert film Take Me To The Plaza. Also on the bill are Ralph Carney (of Gaucho) and some other people.

“Twelve Dusty Diamonds” by The Tiki Men is one of my favorite records of all time. It is wall to wall gems, mostly instrumentals, recorded roughly. It is raw and exuberant in a way unlike anything else I’ve ever heard, like a gang of friends partying hearty in 100-degree Sacramento backyard heat. You can still get it from Hillsdale Records.
Most of the songs are covers, but the originals are credited to one “Micah K.” Last week, I read Micah Kennedy’s obituary in Sacramento’s Midtown Monthly. Read it here, and be sure to stick around for the comments. There are links to mp3s of some of Micah’s stuff, and the flood of memories and corny jokes warms the heart.
The other day I made a crack about not having hometown pride. But I do. I grew up in Sacramento, home of the Tiki Men.
After the jump is a Q&A I did with Micah’s band mate Tim for a fanzine called Noises From The Garage 10 years ago:

Watch this, seriously. Who knew the Mission was on the cutting edge of the bootleg Cumbia scene?
This is a video from XLR8R TV, in which DJ Rupture sits down at Taqueria Cancun to explain what Cumbia is and why he loves it so much, and why piracy in certain circles ain’t so bad (it’s just another form of distribution).
And then he infiltrates one of our fine neighborhood bootleggeries with a spy cam to afford us a view inside this secret world. Also, he says stuff like, “Ever since I got into Cumbia, the numbers of CDs I have with women in bikinkis on the cover has skyrocketed.”
(Thanks, Alex!)

Only it’s in Oakland this time, and there’s a racetrack. Apparently they’ve been racing high-octane cardboard vehicles (?) all month. Last week were the semifinals. Tonight, the finals. And with music by Eats Tapes, our new favorite band!
It all happens at LoBot at 8pm.

Mostly I just like this poster, but the party sounds good too. DJ Eug says:
Listen for “psych rock, gypsy disco, balearic groove, electro nostalgia and straight up floor burners…” See the Public Release website for more.
San Francisco State University’s Golden Gate [X]press (wow, that rolls off the tongue almost as good as “Mission Loc@l”) this week published a nice little love letter to Thrillhouse Records, one of our favorite Southern Mission stalwarts:
The economy may be in the toilet, but that isn’t slowing some young concert goers from seeing their favorite bands shred licks and scream through choruses. Au contraire: Bay Area music fans are continuing to be a part of what the underground punk scene has always been about: all-ages, do-it-yourself shows.
Link. It’s not quite as awesome as their Fat Mike profile from a couple months back, but it’s a good read.

Just got an email from Toshio Hirano:
Hello Everyone
I have a set at Rite Spot Cafe on April 28th Sat. 9:00 to 11:00.
Hope see there
Toshio Hirano
The Rite Spot website confirms that he meant “March 28th Sat.,” and hence is playing tonight. Show is free.
Any reason to go to the Attic is a good reason. Elton from World Famous in San Francisco offers one up:
One of my favorite DJ’s, if not my favorite DJ is spinning what may be his final show tonight at the Attic. Larry has been spinning every other Saturday at the Attic from 6 to 9 for some time now. We hope to have him soon at Club Club You’re Dead but until then come out to the Attic for some great tunes (C-86, Garage, obscure 60’s and local music). Also say goodbye to Jefferson Greene who is working his final shift as bartender.
DJ Fort Nightly is on from 6-9pm. Link.
(I had to look up C-86 too.)
