I Need a Hot Cup of Cocoa Even Though I'm a Jew

Rebecca from My First Earthquake just got in touch to tell us about the band’s new holiday-themed video:

Lil’ backstory: I’m known for breaking into a song from my 5th grade holiday concert whenever it gets as cold as it’s been this week here in SF. It starts with “It’s ca-ca-ca-cold outside, I’m f-f-f-f-freezing…” Holiday cheer + weather smalltalk: what could be better!

That’s Rebecca in the video, along with the guy that directed Lawrence of Arabia apparently. Learn more, and download the track, here.

Concert Calendars on Google Maps

bandloop

Bandloop’s Live music in San Francisco Google Map is my new favorite thing. When I quit riding the bus to work, I also quit picking up free weeklies to read, and since I don’t like scrolling through venue websites on a regular basis, I have consequently found myself outside the live-music loop of late. But this thing is way more fun than scrolling through some ugly website. Problem solved! (via SFist)

Paper Diamonds

This is the video for Ash Reiter‘s dancy new single. Anybody catch her at ATA last night?

Christmas Disco

christmas-disco

I hate to keep harping on how great Airfix Kits are, but, really, anybody that likes anything at all about music should give them a whirl, pronto. And c’mon, here they’re sandwiched between two other formidable acts at an afternoon matinee at The Knockout called Christmas Disco!? Impossible to resist.

We Love Bart Davenport

Legendary Oakland musician Bart Davenport‘s latest album Palaces is really good. This is the video for the first single; it has girls and juggling and xylophone glockenspiel.

The whole rest of the album is great too, but I want to mention two songs in particular. “Freeway Flowers” is a love song from the point of view of a Bay Area resident lost in Los Angeles. It begins, “Don’t know the 10 from the 110…” Been there! The next one is one called “Yerba Buena,” which I think is about being from Oakland and dating someone who lives in the city. Right at the beginning, it mentions the Make-Out Room and 12 Galaxies. Both songs, and all the rest can be sampled (and purchased) here.

Ragtime Guitar God Interviewed at SFO

As I’m waiting for the traffic to clear on I-80, I’m reading this article on SFGate regarding the lack of airport activity at SFO. One person they interviewed was none other than SF’s ragtime guitar god Craig Ventresco who plays regularly at Atlas Cafe and occasionally at other Mission venues such as the Knockout and Amnesia:

“This is eerie,” said guitarist Craig Ventresco, an airport artist-in-residence who was flat-picking “Ain’t She Sweet” for a crowd of one person on a landing near the door to the parking lot. “If this is a sign of the times, it’s frightening.”

Ventresco, whose fingers were flying faster than most planes, said the plummeting economy was making ordinary people as broke as musicians.

“That’s not good,” he added, with a grim smile.

What a treat it would be to happen upon his playing enroute to an always abysmal family holiday.

Palace Family Steak House Theme Song

Rick from Pirate Cat Radio thinks it’s time a new generation of Missionites heard The Palace Family Steak House Theme Song.

Buddy Holly Shrine?

Wait, there was a shrine to Buddy Holly the other night? Pics please.

Chuck D and His Mac at Muddy's

Walter says:

Was at Muddy’s around 10 AM yesterday and sat next to Chuck D. Yes, Public Enemy Chuck D. At Muddys. I was in disbelief, but after he asked me to watch his laptop (a Mac) while he got a cup of coffee, I confirmed. Any other Chuck sightings in the Mission?
