John Moreland tells a story

JohnMoreland_MichelleCrosby

I got tipped off to see John Moreland last night at Thee Parkside by a friend who saw him at Stagecoach last weekend. My friend had to see him again. I’m glad I came along. His powerful and beautifully poetic lyrics melted out of him. Watching John Moreland was mesmerizing. He sang of his truths and sadness and Tulsa, OK, and of a home he no longer called home. An exciting discovery, and hopefully a musician who will continue to glow in the limelight he deserves (but doesn’t seem to want or care about). Listen to his whole new album, High on Tulsa Heat, and hear it for yourself.

Listen to the new single by Andy Human and the Reptoids

Remember Andy from the Cuts and the Time Flys? If so, you’ve been hanging out at the Knockout for a looooong time now, man.

Anyway his new stuff is still retro, but a little more ’80s than ’60s or ’70s. The press release contains the phrase “faded VHS glam punk hangover.” Give it a listen:

The album is out in late May on Ss Records out of Sacramento, and the band is playing a couple dates in SF in the coming weeks:

05/23 – Parkside with Violence Creeps, tbd
06/04 – Record release at Knockout with MUSK, Stalls, and The Rays

Listen to this EP from 2012 by Hollow Boys, a band from Minneapolis

I was at Pop’s late last night and the bartender was playing this EP by a friend’s band. I was super into it at the time, and now, in the sober light of day, I’m still really into it:

Imagine yourself onstage at karaoke singing a New Pornographers song

Our pal Nattles got to do it, last year at a Karaoke Underground show in Austin:

A video posted by Allan Hough (@punkgirls) on

The Karaoke Underground is in SF for the very first time this Sunday night at Rickshaw Stop!

1-2-3-4 Go! Records is open btw

We originally reported that they were opening on Record Store Day (April 18th) — but in fact they are softly opened right now! And chock full of good stuff!

(I won $100 in a music-related bet last night, and spent every last cent of it at 1-2-3-4 Go! this morning.) (Also, if you spend $100 you get a free t-shirt.)

Free show tonight: Culture Abuse, Scraper, Never Young

Wood Shoppe Culture Abuse Mission MissionTonight at Brick and Mortar check out their monthly FREE party Wood Shoppe featuring three pretty cool Bay Area punk bands Culture Abuse, Scraper, and Never Young!
