$500,000 to Reduce Violence in the Mission

On the eve of the big debate amongst his possible successors as District 9 Supervisor, Tom Ammiano asked the city for half a mil to help combat violence here in the Mission. SF Gate has the scoop:

The Board of Supervisors is considering spending an extra $500,000 to reduce violence in the Mission District, which has faced a wave of violence this year. But Mayor Gavin Newsom wants the supervisors to first work with his office to decide whether the money already spent in the neighborhood needs to be redeployed on more effective measures.

More effective measures? Sounds prudent, but can it be done? Link.

K, so I gots a question… where in the nabe can I watch the presidential debate and then quickly slide over to the supes debate? It would take me a good 10 minutes to get from home to Victoria theatre, and by then I’m sure this place will be packed. Hmm.

500 Club, 17th and Guerrero – less than 10 mins. They were on the list of bars showing the VP debates. Believe they even have HDTVs.

  4. The $500k Ammiano wants is reportedly to come from the General Fund Reserve. The reserve is one of the main things credit agencies (like Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard and Poor) look at when they decide what bond rating to give this City. Our bond rating is what investors look at to see if they want to by SF bonds and on what terms. With the huge Prop A (SF General Hospital rebuild) bonds in the works, I’m guessing that’s why the Mayor is trying to avoid dipping into that reserve fund – for fear of negatively affecting our rating. Though it may be not be avoidable – everyone agrees that something has to be done. Glad to see Ammiano being proactive.
