How to Repel a Rapist

Ramona has a new technique:

Lately, when I’m walking somewhere alone at night, and I get a little nervous, I’ve taken to walking really fast and glancing at my watch a lot.

It probably works. If you’re in a hurry, someone’s probably expecting you, so you’re more likely to be missed, and a posse is more likely to be formed. Anyway, read on.

I always walk fast when I’m alone. It didn’t prevent my being followed and attacked on Valencia in February. I think most of it is wrong place/ wrong time, unfortunately.

I hate that phrase, wrong place wrong time. You were trying to get where you were going when you needed to. What’s wrong with that? It sounds like blaming the victim. You’re not at fault for your attack.

You’re right. I guess what I meant to say is that I encountered someone who was determined to do something bad and the fact that I was aware of my surroundings and walking fast and with confidence did not act as a deterrent. Poor choice of wording on my part.
