Attempted mugging (with taser)

Reader Noah B. wrote in to tell us what happened to him on Monday night:

  1. I was walking home from Churchills at about 8:15 pm (on 14th street just past Dolores )
  2. I was talking on my phone when a man TASED (yes tazed) me on my left side.  It was not as bad as i thought it would be but def scared shit out of me ..must have been a cheap taser (per cops)
  3. I fell down for quick sec but got up instantly and told him to “Get the eff away from me!” (loud)
  4. I continued to back up and he said to me “give me your phone or i’ll shoot you”
  5. Since i only saw the tazer in his hand, I told him to go fuck himself (loud again) (prob not smartest move i know)
  6. At that time i see a woman coming and i yell at him “there is a witness now and we are calling the cops!”  He then took off…

Cops came and i was given a case number. The guy was an African american male in his early 20′s about 5’8 wearing a hoodie. Reminder to never walk alone at night and talk on your cell or text….they are looking for that now and it has been happening nightly the police say. I’m super lucky!

Interesting. I always thought that you would be less likely to be robbed if you were talking on a cell phone because you could simply shout a description of the robber into the phone, give an exact location, and tell the other person to call the cops.

I guess a taser changes that equation.

    • rod says:

a person with a phone is distracted. a person with a phone is also demonstrating that they have a phone, which is something worth taking.

  6. noah says:

many people think that but its the opposite. you are distracted if talking on the phone and they will come up behind you. You will not have a sec to say whats happening to you and even if you do the guy will be gone by the time the cops get there….it’s all so fast..

  7. No fish today says:

Y’all need to carry some sort of blade on yourselves.

  8. terrapun_sf says:

    People still talk on phones?

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Only people who want to talk to someone who isn’t standing right next to them.

  9. EH says:

WTF…USE YOUR PHONE AND TAKE A PICTURE OF THE GUY. Say, “there you go dude, now you’re on the internet. now, can i help you?”

  10. batman says:

batmans advise is always carry a serrated ceramic knife.. stab and slahs… some one will walk away with a credible scar

    • rod says:

in all seriousness i would not recommend anyone carry a knife for protection unless they are very well trained in how defend themselves with it. it’s very easy to hurt yourself with a knife and/or have it snatched from you and used against you.

  11. LeftTheMission says:

African American you say? How do you know?

  12. rod says:

always keep an eye out for someone getting too close to you when you are walking alone. if there’s no one else on the sidewalk there’s no reason for anyone to be invading your personal space. thugs come in all forms, but most of the ones around here seem to be wearing black hoodies and baggie jeans.

if you hear someone following behind you, turn around and take a look. if it looks like someone you don’t want following you, go ahead and cross the street, even if it’s un-PC to do so. if the person follows you across the street, start running.

A black guy in a black hoodie – wow say it ain’t so. So fucking typical these days. Would I be mistaken to say that blacks commit far more crime than any other segment of the populace? Why is this so? What about the culture of violence is so appealing to black men from the time they’re teens to adults (Mission rapist)?

    • Ariel Dovas says:

If you’re really asking the question, my opinion would be to look at the root causes, such as institutionalized racism and the cultural cycles that enforce it. See comments on this site by people who are perfectly comfortable pre-judging young black men they see on the street – people being assumed to be criminal by both police and civilians, with less opportunity than those around them – how long till they begin to act as they are expected to? I’ve seen many affective examples of intervention, stepping in to a young person’s life before they get caught up in the cycle of violence, diverting their path to a positive one, which is proof to me that it is truly a cycle and not a race-specific epidemic.

  14. roller23rd says:

man, I’ll be so happy when we all make so much money that things get too expensive here for the blacks to stay and they move away.

  15. Andreas Karlsson says:

Walking and talking on your phone at night WITHOUT minding your surroundings is pretty much assigning a big bullseye on your back.

  16. Amanda Andrews says:

We live here and refer to our block as “Lower Safeway”. Sorry this happened to you, Noah.

I was just mugged on Thursday night (the 19th) around 8pm right in front of Pauline’s pizza on 14th and Valencia. I was talking on the phone and a dude with a hoodie on ran up from behind me and punched me in the face and stole my phone. Same guy? Seems likely since the dude that hit me was also a younger, 5’8″, black man with a hood on.
