But then Mission Street Food set me straight. I love brown rice.
I had this revelation a few weeks ago, when their sesame avocado brown rice was topped with eel-banana tempura. And that was great. Successful experiment.
But tonight the sesame avocado brown rice was topped with your choice of pork belly or broccoli rabe — two of the most tried-and-true things in the world. I had both. Both bowled me over, and then some.
The other items were great too. (From now on, no more hot sauce on my chicken wings — Tabasco granita is the way to go.)
Also, a shout out to how small a world it is here in San Francisco. By chance I was seated at a table with Devin from West Gate of Babylon and Heidi from Engineer’s Daughter. We talked reggae and Aliens.

Family Styles has a gorgeous photographic recap of the food at the food writing panel at 826 Valencia the other night, and they report that my Three Kinds of Wings report was erroneous. In fact, there was but one kind of wings, but they were triple fried. Link.
Mei is also working on some sort of lengthy meditation on the ideas brought up during the discussion, but for now there’s also this.
Also, the Mission Street Food Saturday menu is up and WINGS ARE ON IT. Also, a good number of vegetarian options.
Yesterday we published a reminder about the food writing seminar tonight hosted by 826 Valencia and Chris from Plebiscite and Mission Street Food.
In the comments section, Karen from Mission Street Food added that Anthony from Mission Street Food will be doing the food for the event. What’s on the menu? “[T]hree kinds of wings!”

Plebiscite gives us a peek at what topics might be covered: consumer complacency, the journalism question, bacchanalian farm parties, etc.
Link. Tickets still seem to be available.

Mei at Family Styles has a full rundown of yesterday’s Grilled Cheese Invitational in Dolores Park:
i got there a little after the start time of 1pm, and missed the handout of orange wristbands that marked you as a judge and therefore entitled you to plates of sandwiches. this wasn’t explained too well on the website (some dude admitted they were a bit disorganized) but the vibe was great and people were giving out taster sandwiches anyway, you just couldn’t vote. then people started leaving and giving up their wristbands, and then competitors started handing out the plates to anyone, so we ended up with a pretty fantastic selection.
Tons more pictures and commentary here.

At Mission Street Food last night I was too busy savoring the fucking triple-awesome nachos to even think about taking any pictures of anything.
Until I was waiting in line for the restroom. What is this lucky charm?
P.S. Karen is positively heroic in the Chronicle writeup, amirite?

Wow, look, people that make designer ice cream also like the internet!
Family Styles has a whole big feature here.
