Who Is the Super Secret Band Headlining Aquarius Records' 40th Anniversary Party?

The press release lists a bunch of bands that are playing and then says:

PLUS a special, secret headliner!!! We can’t tell you who they are just yet, but there’s a pretty good chance you bought their new album from us… and their shows are usually at places a bit bigger than the DuNord… and they’re on the poppier, sunshinier side of things… huge faves here.

Girls? Foot Village? Third Eye Blind? Brian Wilson? Who will it beeeeeee?

$10 advance tickets are for sale now at Aquarius and Cafe du Nord.

Treasure Island Music Festival Mixtape Might Help You Decide Which Day to Go

The nice folks over at The Bay Bridged have put together a couple of mixtapes highlighting artists at this year’s Treasure Island Music Festival, which takes place this coming weekend. They’ve got a mixtape for Saturday (which is the electronic-themed day headlined by LCD Soundsystem) and a mixtape for Sunday (which is the indie-rock-themed day headlined by Belle & Sebastian).

So if you’re still undecided, you might want to give these bad boyz a listen and see if this fest is really worth the price of admission. (Or, at the very least, here’s some nice free music for you.)

B. Hamilton

I saw this band B. Hamilton at Amnesia on Friday, and they blew me away! Frontman Ryan has a voice like a very gruff and masculine angel, and the band — even on an off night, apparently — produces all these beats and rhythms and sounds that make you want to drink and dance and drink and dance and drink and dance!

Pop over to their website and try out this song called “Miss Carolina.” Smells like a hit to me!

P.S. F.Y.I. I brought some babes, as requested.

Gypsy Jazz Legend Robin Nolan at Revolution Cafe Tonight

I’m totally stoked that Robin Nolan is performing at Revolution Cafe tonight.

Robin is a certifable guitar god from Amsterdam that plays Django Reinhardt-style jazz, with his own unique spin. He can shred the Django stuff with the best of them, but isn’t afraid to let his rock and experimental influences make their way in the mix. For example, check out his bitchin’ AC/DC “For Those About To Rock” intro to his recent set in Seattle:

He also literally wrote the book(s) on this style of music that everyone, including myself, learned from.

The show goes from about 9pm-12am and there’s no cover, so be sure to tip these guys a lot. And who knows, I might be joining them for a couple of tunes. This place tends to be a shit show every night, so get there early if you want a seat.

Attention All Babes

Hey, babes. According to my Facebook wall, Ryan Christopher Parks (A.K.A. Boots Hamilton) requires your presence at his performance tomorrow night at Amnesia:

I don’t understand the Dave Winfield reference either, but Ryan is a sweetheart, despite all the yelling. And I hear he’s a musical genius, despite this YouTube video. RSVP via Facebook event page here.

Muni Repair

Yeah, I think Muni Diaries should probably Photoshop this into an epic new logo right about now.

P.S. Muni Diaries Live will back at the Make-Out Room later this month, with a special Halloween edition.

Gender War in Full Effect

These are screen shots from a new music video collaboration between local musician Bobby Joe Ebola and local bike-inspired dance team the Derailleurs. It seems to be some kind of statement about sexism or something. See for yourself.

CONTEST: Win Tickets to Guided By Voices Classic Lineup Tour Tomorrow at the Warfield!

Guided By Voices are back for real! And they’re playing tomorrow night at the Warfield! And you can win tickets by leaving a comment below explaining why you deserve the tickets more than anyone else! Bonus points for creativity! Winner will be chosen by Mission Mission editors before 5pm tonight, based on merit, and notified ASAP!

The show is presented by Noise Pop, and features opening act Times New Viking, who I saw at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit this summer. They were awesomely contemporary.

How Was the Arcade Fire Show?

TK was a bit underwhelmed:

I mean, they played great and everybody loved them and everything but I was just sitting there waiting for something to happen and it never did.

Read on for expert analysis of the totally square Greek Theatre crowd, jerks that talk the whole time, and some seriously deep thoughts on the nature of the Arcade Fire.

Mission Make-Out 1999

Time for a Saturday-morning diversion from this weekend’s bluegrass overload. Kamanaka explains why she likes this fan-made video for the Le Tigre classic “Deceptacon”:

It’s cute and the song reminds me of my underage fake ID drunken debauchery days of when I visited my cousin in San Francisco. (YAY WHERE I NOW LIVE!) Bitches would go crazy over this song…and I still do when I hear it when I’m out. Here’s to the old days of “Mission Make-out”. Cheers.

Cheers!

P.S. It also reminds me of checking out Yeah Right! from the San Francisco Public Library over and over in 2004 or so. That movie rules.
