I'm From Eugene

Ramona Emerson’s latest Things San Franciscans Like column is up, and it’s a keeper as usual. It’s called “Things San Franciscans Like: Not Being San Franciscans,” and it contains stuff like this:

Everyone you meet in San Francisco is champing at the bit to tell you how they’re not from here, and will try to insert their own place of origin as often as possible:

“Do you know where the bathroom is?”
“I’m from Eugene.” (Which you shouldn’t necessarily take as a ‘No’)

This is like a siren’s call to other people from Oregon, and someone nearby will be obligated to ask if this person perhaps knows their cousin’s cat Misty.

unless of course you’re from the bay area, then you keep it a secret which lame-ass bay area town you’re from (with the exception of oakland). off to go champ at the bit.

Last night at Doc’s Clock someone asked me where the bathroom was and I said ā€œIā€™m from Eugene.ā€ It was awesome.

@Glenparker: Totes understand. I try not to tell people where I live, lest I be embarrassed by terrible restaurants such as Le P’tit Laurent, Chenery Park and Gialina. :-)

  4. Nothing beats revealing to folks living in SF that you’re originally from OC. Even if they’re from Montan-chigan-dakota-nesota-abama-cramento, the affected reaction is always the same.
