New bus-and-taxi-only lanes going in on Mission Street today

FullSizeRender 11 copy

Just walked past this scene, out by 30th and Mission.

SF Gate has more details:

The painting should be done by March or April, at which time the Municipal Transportation Agency will start banning left turns at every intersection between 14th and Cesar Chavez streets and requiring right turns off of Mission Street at 16th, 20th, 22nd, 24th and 26th streets. [link]

So if you’re like me and love driving all the way down Mission Street, you better do it now while you still can. (Also, they eliminated some inefficient bus stops, so make sure your favorite stops still exist before trying to use them.)

Whoa, I didn’t know about this. I live right by Mission and 30th. I’m not sure why this is happening, but hopefully it’s a good thing? I often drive on Capp up to Cesar Chavez just because Mission is such a shitshow, but I always feel a little bad for the residents of Capp for using their little street as a thoroughfare.

San Jose between 28th and 30th is blocked off 8-5 M-F for the next 2 months, so I assume that’s related.

Now that I think of it, the mandatory turns off of Mission Street is probably borne out of a desire to make Mission Street into the same kind of vibrant shoppeing strip as Valencia, an achievement that has eluded us until now. Well, everybody’s gotta be able to get to El Techo de Lolinda one way or another.

The reason it’s happening is pretty simple: “because Mission is such a shitshow”

Has been for a very, very long time. Anything that can move buses through there faster is worth doing, frankly.
