World of raw AM sounds

Night Fog Reader is a new blog devoted to local independent music in San Francisco. They’ve got news and reviews, interviews and the occasional mix.

A couple weeks back, we listened to a new single by ’60s throwback Nick Waterhouse, and since then it seems Nick has put together a special mix just for Night Fog Reader readers. It’s full of a bunch of nasty vintage sounds, all ripped directly from the original vinyl. What a treat!

I’m a few songs in, and it’s sounding pretty choice so far. Click here to have a listen.

Korean pop music video filming in the Mission

Wow! Top K-Pop band K.R.A.Z.Y recently chose Clarion Alley to film their latest video. Watch these heartthrobs show their synchronized stuff:

Disclaimer: may not be a real K-pop band. Might just be some bored teens that weren’t good at skateboarding or basketball.

The Dave Hillyard Rocksteady 7 at Bender’s Sunday

The Dave Hillyard Rocksteady 7 played an afternoon show at Bender’s last year and they are making a stop there again this Sunday.

This all-star group features members from the two of the best traditional ska revival groups of the ’90s, the Slackers and Hepcat. They will be joined by living legend and percussionist Larry McDonald of the Skatalites, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, and Lee Perry. Expect heavy instrumental reggae and rocksteady sounds with Dave’s signature jazzy chops.

Free rocksteady and BBQ! Does it get any better? The show starts at 1:30pm 3pm at Bender’s on 19th and S. Van Ness. Here’s the event page, and a snippet from the last show:

Update: Dave says the show actually starts at 3pm.

Let’s get hella gay!

Stay Gold is celebrating its 5th anniversary tonight at Public Works! Here’s the deal:

Calling all homos, queers, gayz, lezzies, butches, trannies, twinks, dandies, daddies, fatties, femmes, faggots and friends for a night of white hot cruising and solid gold dancing.

What started 5 years ago as a DIY dive-y dance club that felt more like a house party than a nightclub quickly became what is now one of San Francisco’s most beloved and packed queer dance nights, Stay Gold.

Along with rotating guest DJs each month, residents Pink Lightning and Rapid Fire play all of your favorite gay dance jams from hip-hop to 90s. People can’t help but sing along with their friends, find a hottie to make out with, or lose themselves grinding on the dance floor to hit after hit.

While Stay Gold has called cherished mission hot spot, The Make Out Room, home since the event’s inception, they are ready for a change and are moving a few blocks down Mission Street to new San Francisco nightlife darling, Public Works. “The spacious dance floor and awesome sound system at Public Works are sure to appeal to all of the hot, sweaty die-hards that are always asking to turn the bass up louder.

RSVP and invite your friends here.

New music venue opens at Mission and Duboce tonight

A new music venue called Brick and Mortar is opening up tonight with the local Ray Charles tribute band: Rayband. They start at 9:30pm. Here’s the event page. The venue is at Mission and Duboce which puts it right by Discount Builders Supply, a great place to go if you need lots of pipe.

Looks like they are going for a funk and soul vibe, and have a pretty ambitious lineup for the coming months, including Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, Breakestra, and Daptone records presents Charles Bradley.

Update: The venue occupies the old Coda space, according to SFWeekly.

Surprise Sheryl Crow live acoustic set last night at Beauty Bar?

It’s true too. We checked with her management company AND her Twitter. AND her Tumblr. It’s true. Janebook doesn’t lie.

Anyway, I’m sorry I missed it. I hear her new stuff is dope.

Reminder: Debaser 3rd anniversary party is tonight at 111 Minna!

And to help get you in the mood, earlier this week the Debaser boys released a new mix, and get this: it’s a sort of re-imagining of the Singles soundtrack:

[H]ere it is, our first ever, full length, official Debaser mixtape. That only took three years to get around to!

We like our parties to be period accurate wherever possible. So in that spirit, we present you with our ode to love and love lost in the ’90s, themed around the classic, Cameron Crowe film, Singles. If you listen closely, you can hear some choice cuts from the film, but also the ringing, jangling sound of the fall of 1992 and spring of 1993.

Epic! Listen here.

And don’t forget to check out all the submissions in the comments section of our Debaser 3rd anniversary party ticket giveaway. Tons of killer YouTube clips!

And of course, it’s never too late to RSVP and invite your friends to tonight’s party.

Mellow times
