Recreation Programs at Neighborhood Parks in Peril

Reader Mel wrote in with a message for anyone using recreation programs at neighborhood parks:

Lay offs are in progress.  Program cuts are likely.  There is a hearing tonight (another on March 11th) to discuss the budget and cuts to parks and rec.  If anyone has time to go to the hearings and speak out in support of these programs and the people who run them – the details of the meeting are in the e-mails below [...]

Emails after the jump:

From the Recreation Director at Parque Ninos Unidos

Hi,

I would like to thank everyone for their support by sending emails and phone calls to the Commissioners, Mayors office and Board of Supervisors. The next two weeks is a crucial time for all recreation employees, especially those 78 permanent Recreation Directors that were given lay off pink slips Friday, February 27, 2009. These lay offs will be effective May 1, 2009 if we do not overload the next two meeting held on March 5, 2009 and March 11, 2009 with mothers, fathers, grandparents, nanny’s, community members etc. Without your voices and appearances, we will not receive the Children’s Fund money that we are asking for.

Please read the following email, which was sent to me by my supervisor. I have also added the agenda for the meeting that will be held Thursday March 5, 2009. Please read over it and see if anyone in your family can attend. If you or anyone you know would like to speak on behalf of SFRPD please make sure to fill out the BLUE CARD or you will not be able to voice your concerns. Again, I really appreciate all of your time and know that everyone has their own busy lives. If you do find the time to attend the meetings, please remember you will be helping save the recreation sector of our department and all the facilities, programs and staff that provide it.

Thank you and please forward all this information to everyone. The more people that are aware of the issues our department is facing, the more support we will hopefully get.

“Hi All,The DCYF meeting this Thursday is their CAC or Citizens Advisory Committee meeting. The time is 5:30pm – 8:00pm at 1390 Market, Suite 900. This is the equivalent to a commission. We NEED to get as many people to this meeting asking for $4.8 mil to be put into the Recreation Departments budget. Be mindful that most of these people that have been appointed to this Committee are CBO or Non-Profit oriented people. We need to advocate for the money to be used for the current recreation & park department staff to continue administering the programs at the centers. We need to speak specifically to the after school programs the early childhood programs and the sports and recreation programs. These are all “categories” for funding under DCYF. Let’s keep up the fight now is not the time to slow down.
