Mission Pizza Parlor Actually Closes

image

This certainly goes against the Zeitgeist. Instead of following the trend of a new pizza place opening every other month, Papa Potrero has closed its doors for good.

Surprising, sure, but at the same time I suppose that unlike this place, no one has ever been gunned down at Delfina.  But they sure came close!

Improved Rum Cocktail

It’s called “The Old Shoe,” it contains good rum, a couple other ingredients and but one giant-sized ice cube, and you can get it in that cute little back room at Dalva.

I don’t usually go for rum drinks unless I’m on an island or something, but this is my new favorite cocktail. It’s a bit of a puzzler. Not one bit tropical. Rather, it actually does taste like an old shoe, but in a good way. A great way. Noodle that for a minute.

Or just go try an Old Shoe.

All Our Pierogi Pleas Have Been Answered!

It all began earlier this year with one reader’s impassioned plea for some decent pierogi in San Francisco. There was lots of interest, lots of talk. There was an email thread called “Pierogi Party” for a while, but I don’t recall whether it ever came together or not.

This weekend, finally, there’s a pierogi pary in SF. PierogiSF tells us all about it:

The Pierogi Plea Is Being Answered on Saturday, Dec 18th – Twice!

PierogiSF (http://www.twitter.com/pierogisf) and Oakland’s Natural Cookery (https://www.facebook.com/1219cookery?v=wall) have each heard the pleas for delicious pierogi in the Bay Area, and we’re answering the call at this Saturday’s (12/18) New Taste Marketplace! (http://www.newtastemarketplace.org) 4-9pm at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in Potrero Hill, 500 De Haro at Mariposa.

Your Idea Isn't the Right Fit for Kickstarter

I saw this just now and it just about broke my heart.

Ryan Christopher Parks (of B. Hamilton fame), Mission Mission would hereby like to buy you a sandwich.

Gone Bananas

Amie spotted this sad banana at Rainbow Grocery this weekend. I blame the raw foodists.

San Francisco's Highest Taqueria

The eternal question:  What to do when your uncle left you in charge of his car and you’ve got a few hours to kill before you the Weezer cover band goes on later that evening?  The answer, as always:  EXPLORATION ADVENTURE!

This particular expedition led us to what we believe to be the highest taqueria in San Francisco.  Not quite in the sense that they also function as a green medicinal clinic, but rather according to pure altitude.  Nestled up against Twin Peaks on 755 Portola Drive, the Miraloma Market appears at first to be just another neighborhood grocery store until you realize that it also houses a full-fledged and surprisingly tasty taco shop of its own inside.

The menu includes all the regular stuff you’d expect, such as juicy al pastor and delectable carnitas in burritos and quesadillas and such, but the highlight is the unique EL VEGGIE burrito, which consists of an assortment of steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and other vegetables in addition to the normal beans, rice, cheese, salsa, and guacamole.  Yes, that’s a right:  a Broccoli Burrito.  Delicious enough to get any Papalote-loving vegetarian up the hill once in a while.

Adventure wins once again (and that Weezer cover band was pretty good too).

These Burritos Are the Worst

I get it. Sometimes it’s tough to trudge that extra couple blocks. Sometimes you just need a burrito in your face NOW.

Nice Cans

I’m fighting back my gag reflex as I post this.
