Best Restaurant in the Mission?

The 2009 Michelin Guide to San Francisco Bay Area & Wine Country released its results today.  Range remains the only restaurant in the Mission to get a star and thus maintains its status as “a very good restaurant in its category.”  Known for being extremely frugal with its stars, the Michelin Guide refused to allow Bar Tartine, Delfina, Farina, or Tokyo Go Go a spot in their coveted constellation, but acknowleged that these places provide a good meal for less than $40.

Maybe its the fact the $40 does not sound like a bargain for me, but I have sadly not yet been to any of these places.  Until then, I will console myself knowing that Range gets 4 stars on Yelp and El Tonayense Taco Truck gets 4.5.

Ice Cream Social Tonight

Southern Exposure tonight hosts the culmination of artist Brion Nuda Rosch‘s month-long residency, which has featured an ice cream stand and a series of ice cream socials:

Throughout the month, ice cream has been served and conversations have been had. Visit the gallery for a final social and opportunity to experience the ephemera of past activities and actions. The Portable Ice Cream Stand is a happening, and we offer you an invitation to participate.

Displacement Alert: King Trumpet Sandwich w/Bacon Displaces Bacon-Wrapped Hotdog as Best Thursday Night Street Food

It’s true. But is it a metaphor for something unsavory, or is it just amazingly savory? Thanks, Mission Street Food!

Update: Burrito Justice has some tasty visuals here.

Late-Night Gourmet Roach Coach: Week 2

Tonight, Mission Street Food is back in full force. Chef Anthony wrote in after last week’s big debut:

Hi, this is Anthony. Thanks to everyone who came and withstood a long wait, and sorry to anyone who came after we sold out. I was expecting a soft opening consisting of foot traffic and a couple of friends, but those friends did me the “favor” of spreading the word for the opening (as well as the favor of helping me in a pinch–thanks you guys).

Anyway, the truck came 40 minutes late and there were a few customers before I had even set foot inside to cook there for the first time ever. I was moving things in and getting organized when a friend texted me about a line in front. I will definitely be ready next week. I plan to be open every week, but in case of rain or serious mishap, I’ll post closures here: http://missionstreetfood.blogspot.com.

Thanks again–it was great to see local eaters mobilize so quickly. See you Thursday.

Yessir, rapid mobilization is the stamp of us local eaters. In any case, tonight should be good. The official menu and official hours of operation can also be found at the aforementioned URL.

Open Stable

Yum Diary just tried out the newly opened Stable Cafe on Folsom Street. They call it a great lunch spot and offer as evidence pictures (lots of pictures) and descriptions of the place’s gourmet sandwiches — sandwiches with ingredients like figs and brie and zucchini. Link.

Journey to the Center of the Outer Sunset

Bikes in the City just trekked out to Trouble Coffee, the only reason we know of to visit the Outer Sunset. They had a great time getting to know the proprietor, and they got a lot of colorful pictures. Link.

Also, thanks again, Eve!

High-Falootin' Bar Tartine Line Cook Goes Nitty Gritty

Via our inbox:

TONIGHT (THURSDAY): High-falootin’ line cook from Bar Tartine goes all nitty
gritty and shit.

Anthony Myint is subletting an antojitos truck in what, hopefully, will become a recurring Thursday night event.

He’ll be peddling an assortment of sandwiches, each served on a piece of
homemade scallion flatbread. Among them, the highly anticipated PB&J (Pork
Belly and Jicama) and the busty vegetarian King Trumpet (wild mushrooms and
triple fried potato).

WHEN: Thursday night, 8pm-2am. Watch Biden dispense of Palin and then hop
down to 21st and Mission to still your beating heart.

Um, prices are reasonable, dude. $3-$5.

Support local line cooks.

I’m there. Thanks, Andrew.

'Well-Edited' Mexican at El Metate

SF Gate published a brief review of El Metate just now, in which they call its cuisine “well-edited.” As a professional writer, I love the editing process perhaps more than anything, so I’m definitely gonna get behind this new use for this particular turn of phrase. Katie made me an extremely well-edited curry chicken sandwich today, by the way. Link. (Thanks, JimBeam)

Haiku Reviews of Mission District Taquerias

Four Barrel Ethiopian

Who loooves coffee!? Coffee Like Wine does, and they’ve just reviewed some of the best Four Barrel Coffee has to offer:

[T]he Kocherie was a dead ringer for Darjeeling tea, with a lithe mouthfeel and astringent and spicy flavors in the mouth. On the nose I got that black tea scent as well as a candied fruit, something like those chewy, sugar coated orange slices candy that you pick up from a convenience store, two for $1.

Wow! Read a lot more here.
