The Gooch Palms are definitely my favorite new band of late, and even though they’re from Australia, they’re playing tonight right here in San Francisco:
It might be Sunday, but THAT DOESN’T MATTER cause it’s also Labor Day eve!!! So come celebrate having Monday off with killer cuties POOKIE & THE POODLEZ, Aussie punk sweethearts THE GOOCH PALMS and doo-wop punker ELVIS CHRIST!

Yesterday I wrote about an inspiring scene at a real Strokes show I was at on Sunday night. And I have no doubt this Friday’s fake Strokes show will be just as good, seeing as how its being put on by the folks at Last Nite (spawn of ’90s indie dance party Debaser), on the occasion of their 1st birthday:
DJs Jamie Jams and Emdee celebrate one year of making you all dance to post punk, dance punk and freak folk records.
We’ll be returning to the Elbo Room for one night only. Special guests, Bang On, play the Strokes!
This Friday night is “Ladies Night” at the Knockout. Here’s the plan:
LAAAAAADIES!!!! WE’RE BACK to pay homage to the flyest, most-talented, hardest and most badass women of Rock n Roll, Post-Punk, 80′s Pop, Freestyle, Rn’B, Riot Grrlz, Synth-pop, Rap, Bubblegum, Lazer-Muzik —ALL FEMALE VOX!!!! ONLY WEIRD JAMMERS & HITS!!!!!!
With DJ’s Mayberry and Yule B Sorry PLUS Special Guest DJ SWIFTUMZ!
Last night I passed on my usual karaoke on Wednesdays at El Rio to check out what turned out to be three bands who really had nothing to do with one another. So glad I did though because I saw Vollmer – a blues/country/rock band that looks like the photo above. Real weird group of guys, pretty cool tunes.
Other bands included agro-female-fronted punk group Spider Heart, and classic-jam-band Sad Tires (brought me back to my Vermont days).
Well, hopefully my sharkskin suit still fits. Tonight at thee Parkside, Too Much Pressure, an all star 2-tone ska tribute band is gonna be playing skankable hits from the ’80s. What constitutes all-star? Well here are a few of the singers:
Mike Park – Skankin’ Pickle, Asian Man Records
Karina Denike – Dance Hall Crashers
Jesse Wagner – the Aggrolites
As well as a backing band made up of the awesome members of Let’s Go Bowling, the Phenomenauts, and Bad Manners. 3rd wave meets 2nd wave! The early 2000s rudie in you is completely stoked, just own it.
That’s a picture of Fucked Up in Austin in 2010. Next Tuesday, they’re playing in San Francisco, and we’d like to give you some free tickets. Here’s their label’s blurb about the new album, released in June:
Musically, Glass Boys carries echoes of some of the more ragged and adventurous bands from America’s punk past (Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr.), but it also has some of the anthemic charge of the Who and the guttural intensity of Negative Approach. Singer Damian Abraham still growls like a demon, but he’s found more range and depth in his bark. Drummer Jonah Falco does something innovative on the LP, playing four simultaneous drums tracks, two of them in half speed, which gives a subtly psychedelic, disorienting feel. (A limited vinyl edition of the album includes a bonus version that only features Falco’s half-time drums.) The triple-guitar battalion of Mike Haliechuk, Ben Cook, and Josh Zucker still builds symphonies out of feedback and power-chords, but this time around, there’s less emphasis on world-crushing riffs and more on world-creating textures. Bassist Sandy Miranda is now even more a part of that storm, her instrument blurring in with that overwhelming guitar roar.
Sounds excellent! To win tickets, use the phrase “fucked up” in some kind of creative or interesting way in the comments section below. A winner will be decided based on merit. Contest ends Monday at 5pm.
