When I first saw this photo (by photographer Kodiak Greenwood) back in February, I was like “I’m gonna write a song about that.” Here it is:

LOUD & LOCAL is a weekly show on BFF.fm that highlights the best bands from the Bay Area…and now it’s also a rad monthly event! On the first Thursday of the month LOUD & Local presents a bar night to benefit BFF.fm, featuring awesome live bands and guest DJs at Pops Bar. This Thursday Loud and Local features:

Babewatch- energetic, almost spooky psych rock

DJ Digger Barrett- hot licks and dank riffs from yesterday and today

DJ Wam Bam Ashleyanne Krigbaum- rare soul tracks from from the 1960’s: from girl groups, to R&B, to Northern Soul, and feel-good classic soul — all on original 45RPM vinyl.

Come out to Pops and support local music!

Listen to this summer banger ‘Yes and No’ by the Tambo Rays

Yesterday I posted a 5-year-old Tambo Rays song in our announcement about the 20th Street Block Party lineup, saying “it still feels like a summer banger for the present.”

Just now a Bandcamp notification told me to check out a new release by the Tambo Rays, and it turns out it’s an even better summer banger, definitely expressly for the present:

Click through to preorder their forthcoming new album (which gets you an immediate download of “Yes and No”), and then see them play Noise Pop’s 20th Street Block Party, August 19th. Pencil it in.

Announcing this year’s 20th Street Block Party lineup!

Just in time for you to finally be recovering from your Phono del Sol sunburn, it’s time to get excited about the summer’s other big party on the east side of the Mission, Noise Pop’s 20th Street Block Party! Here’s da blurb:

The free neighborhood celebration will bring an eclectic mix of music and entertainment, food and drink, and art to multiple stages along 19th and 20th Streets. In 20th Street Block Party tradition, the music will include some of the best in the Bay Area and beyond. Past performances have included Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Mac Demarco, Two Gallants, Nick Waterhouse, Andrew St. James, and more. Last year’s Block Party saw 20,000 people in attendance and featured Chicano Batman, Miami Horror, Boulevards, Hazel English, and more.

This year’s culinary offerings will be carefully curated to represent a wide array of the Mission’s best flavors. Among the 2016 culinary highlights were Flour + Water, Burma Bear, Farmhouse Kitchen Thai, Universal Café, and many more. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements on this year’s program—including music, food, family-friendly Art Row activities, nonprofit vendors and partners, and more—in the coming months.

And here’s my favorite Tambo Rays song (from a few years back but it still feels like a summer banger for the present):

The Coathangers (all the way from Atlanta) play Phono del Sol this weekend!

Here’s my favorite song from their latest album:

I first saw them about 3 years ago exactly, and I’ve seen them like 6 or 7 times since because they are one of the best bands right now to see live many many times.

They take the stage at 5:30pm, but as you can see, there’s a full lineup all afternoon

unnamed

Phono del Sol takes place every summer at Potrero del Sol, a lovely little park in the far southeast corner of the Mission. Get tickets and more info here.

(Thee Oh Sees are playing too btw.)

Oh Sees (no more Thee?) headline Phono del Sol this week in the Mission

This will be my third time seeing them at Potrero del Sol, and I think I can safely say they’re the best band to see in that park.

Here’s animated GIF (made with Stilly) from the last time they played Potrero del Sol (also headlining a Phono del Sol):

Thee Oh Sees Phono del Sol 2013 Stilly App

That’s pretty much what the show looks and feels like, although now they have two drummers! Here’s a newly released song from their forthcoming new album (and it goes pretty good with the Stilly):

Sure hope they play that one this weekend.

According to Pitchfork, they’ve dropped the Thee from their name, but that only makes them leaner and meaner. DO NOT MISS.

Check out the rest of the lineup (including the Coathangers!!!!) and the food truck lineup and get tickets here.

Ronnie Spector headlines this year’s Hard French pride party!

Debaser is back!

18156093_10154373187762021_7819602789567465976_o

Let’s party like it’s 2008! (Which is when the Debaser party first started, I think.) Here’s the invite for this Saturday’s party, at the Knockout of course:

DJs Jamie Jams and Emdee return with more songs from a time when “alternative” meant “not mainstream.”

It’s like the best episode of 120 minutes or a good night on college radio circa 1993.
