Summer soul

Here are a couple of gems you might’ve heard had you attended last Friday’s edition of Oldies Night at the Knockout:

If you’re a fan of this stuff — and really, if you’re a fan of FUN — you’d do well to go to tonight’s Summer Soul Revue at the Verdi Club. Oldies Night’s DJ Primo will be running the show. Advance tickets and further details here.

Friday night summer soul revue features local music luminaries singing soul standards in the Mission’s biggest ballroom

Here’s what to expect:

Summer is here and on Friday July 8th, local musicians will pay homage to soul greats and E V E R Y O N E will be dancing. The party will be led by DJ Primo and include live performances from Bay Area garage rockers (including members of the Sandwitches and Oakland’s Shannon and the Clams). This will be a summer dance event full of talent and a great selection of music that will take people back to the nights of 60’s southern soul flavor…even if they only know the likes of it if from the movies.

Oh, and be sure to heed the dress code: “Guys wear ties, ladies roll their eyes — and look hot.” RSVP, invite your friends, and purchase advance tickets here.

The art of the remix

Our buddy Myles Cooper (who you might remember from that time he wrote and recorded one of the best party jams in the history of music) just put together a summer mixtape in which he warps and bends some classic hits and classic oddities into a wholly contemporary 31 minutes of summer fun.

Bullett Magazine has the free mp3 and all the details right here.

Ooh, and if you like that, do revisit Myles’ epic reworking of a Mariah Carey tune (complete with Farolito burrito). (What?)

Hard French Pride at Public Works winner!

Congratulations to Cyd for this epic photo that pretty perfectly sums up the Hard French experience and serves as the winner of our free ticket photo contest!  We’re sure you and your friend will have a similarly magnificent time this Sunday, because Pride is finally upon us this weekend and Hard French is ready to celebrate like never before with a whole lineup of DJs and other fun stuff in additon to special guest Erase Errata!

And for the rest of you who might not remember all the details, check them out here!

Arty punks from Tempe bring arty punk to the Verdi

They’re called Vegetable, and I’m not having much luck Googling “vegetable tempe.” But I like the look of this video. They’re playing tonight at the Verdi Club as part of a 7″ release party starring local heroes Grass Widow, who we’ve gushed about a bit previously.

I mean, haven’t you always wanted a reason to go to the Verdi Club for the first time? Tonight’s the night. RSVP and invite your friends here.

CONTEST: Win tickets to Stay Gold’s Hella Gay Pride Kick Off Party

I mean, its only $5 (or $3 if you go early), but nevertheless, you can win free tickets too. And there are two ways to win! Either send us (or link us to) a picture of you in your best gold outfit, OR write in below with your best hella gay anecdote. We’ll choose a winner by 4pm on Tuesday based on merit and that winner will win two tickets to the party.

RSVP and invite your friends here.

Sexy summer fun permeates new Dirty Cupcakes music video

Some of you were underwhelmed by the clumsily shot concert footage we posted a couple weeks back. Lucky for you, Dirty Cupcakes just released a gorgeous new music video with special guest stars and good photography and a storyline and everything. And it’s sexy, and reeks of summer fun. Watch if you dare:

(Oh, and the song is, I guess, forever dedicated to me.)

Devon Williams and Terry Malts at the Knockout tonight!

We’re huge Terry Malts fans over here at MM, but tonight’s show at the Knockout also features a special bonus that’s just too good to pass up.  Our pal Devon Williams happens to be making an appearance, and we haven’t seen him play since high school!

It all started one recess back in 1998 when Devon asked us if we wanted to hear his demo tape.  Casually aware that he was in some Crass-inspired outfit known as Roscoe, we dutifully donned the headphones and braced for the cacophony.  Instead, we were greeted with the most melodic yet tenacious pop punk this side of Pinhead Gunpowder, which you can hear here.  Dubbed “Osker” (Roscoe backwards, sort of), this launched Devon on the most unlikely of journeys, which eventually saw him getting signed by Epitaph, releasing an album, playing at Warped Tour, and in the process becoming one of the most reviled punk bands in Southern California mostly due to his brutal honesty on stage and crowd-taunting antics.  The Punk-O-Rama track remains one of my faves to this day.

He’s toned it down a little bit in recent years, but we still wouldn’t miss this show for the world!

Breezy Nix kicks off summer vacation with sunny San Francisco techno set tonight at Milk Bar

Breezy Nix is back! Here’s a hot new track to go with her hot new Celica convertible:

Jarry by Breezy Nix

And I bet it’ll be even doper in person at tonight’s show:

It’s summer time, and even if it doesn’t warm up in San Francisco you can bet it’ll be HOT at Spilt Milk this month with Shawn Reynaldo, Breezy Nix, & K Avalon.

To keep you nice and cool through the evening we’re gonna be doing a couple of summery $5 cocktails. We’re gonna bring in some ginger beer so we can get you loaded on Bourbon Bucks, and if you’re feeling frisky we’ll also be furnishing y’all with Fernet and Cokes.

RSVP and invite your friends here!

Local tagger Cancer Carl digs Neil Young

Here’s Neil Young performing “I’m the Ocean” with his mid-’90s backing band, Pearl Jam. The best part is the last minute or so:
