MM at SXSW: Conference jerks

If you go to official showcases or corporate-sponsored shows of any kind, this pair will get in your way. They will block your view, and spend all night shouting back and forth at each other about “faggots” and “sluts” and “awesome nachos.”

MM at SXSW: Corporations are everywhere

It’s to be expected. But it gets tiresome quick. Tomorrow I’m only hanging out at Beerland, and maybe some house shows.

Phantogram were cool though.

Like, huh?

But I like it.

MM at SXSW: The Strokes close with ‘Last Nite’ accompanied by fireworks spectacular

I almost lost my mind. The Strokes, playing on basically the eve of their first album in five years or something dropping, playing to a beyond-capacity (thanks to hordes of fence-hoppers) crowd on the shore of Lake Austin, debuting new stuff, debuting reworked versions of old stuff — and then the fireworks.

Here’s some decent video:

MM at SXSW: Smith Westerns rule!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUs6F1b62UY

Since last night was Thursday night, they changed the lyric to “Everybody wants to be a star on a Thursday night.” Omg! So thoughtful!

At some point, the frontman paused to say:

I just wanna say, if you have a blog or a twitter and you wanna talk some shit about us, fuck you. I’m gonna find you and kill you.

Sooo, like I said, Smith Westerns rule!

UPDATE: Here’s an actual good video by them, and it even sort of tonally fits with the above quote…

(Thanks, Lizzy!)

Money-saving tip: collect rainwater on your way to the gig

You can store a lot of rainwater in a double-bass! Stick funnels in the f-holes for added efficiency. Bottle and save for later.

Sexual assault sells

The disco era sure was a different era.

Real jazz musicians pet dogs during their solos

Our pal Joshua checked out the free jazz show at Explorist International and had this to say:

At one point a dog wandered in, the drummer paused to pet the dog and the other musicians sorta filled in for the missing beats only to have the drummer jump back in at the right moment, free jazz at it’s best.

Hear that jazzbos? Don’t let a little thing like “being in the middle of a performance” keep you from taking care of business. Work it into your solo. Read on for the full typo-ridden review.

I am so hungover

Hey, if you think you might need help getting pumped about the CRANBERRIES COVER BAND performing tonight, Honey In Yr Brain has just the thing. It’s a video, about being hungover.

Watch it here.

Free Jazz Friday at the Explorist International, that newish record store on 24th Street you’ve passed a million times but haven’t been into yet

Yeah, you, commuter. You’ve been passing this Explorist International place twice a day since October, and you always say to yourself, “Hey, I should go in there one of these days,” but you’re always in too much of a hurry. Right?

Well, tonight’s the night. At 7 sharp there’s a free jazz party going on. The core duo are a drummer and a vibraphonist I think, which should be dope.

At the last event, some random kid rolled up on a skateboard, pulled out a pocket trumpet and jammed on the last couple numbers, and then skated off into the night without another word. Rad.

And follow their blog for updates about hot deals and future goings on.
