Mopeds on the Freeway (Video)

What happens when a bunch of dinky little mopeds hop on 280 between King Street and Mariposa? Watch this video and find out.

Getting Taxis in the Mission

Zoe from the Chronicle just hipped us to Phil Bronstein’s latest column, and the accompanying video:

Phil just posted original video interviewing the famous Chronicle Night Cabbie as well as a sampling of other cabbies around town, discussing the mayor’s proposed “medallions for sale” plan. One of the cabbies he talked to said one of the best places in town to grab a fare was the Mission.

Link. The question is, why is the Mission such a great place to grab a fare? Is it because there’s always someone waiting because there’re never enough cabs?

This is the video for “American Water,” a new single by Please Quiet Ourselves from Berkeley. It is a minute and 40 seconds of teenage heart and soul.

It's Just That Song

OK, I’m bummed again. Lux Interior has passed away. I will never see the Cramps again. This is a movie I made, the emotional heart of which is a Cramps song containing probably my favorite Lux vocal ever.

Vimeo Offline Tonight at ATA

At Artists’ Television Access tonight, Vimeo Community Manager Blake Whitman screens a selection of films originally produced for viewing on the internet. Expect it to be like a screening of YouTube videos, only less dumb and with better picture quality. Link. (Thanks, Eric!)

Police and Marching Bands

In the street, scaring the nation with their drums and ammunition.

(Extra Action Marching Band and the SFPD a couple nights ago somewhere around Revolution Cafe or Doc’s Clock according to Twitter.)

Fridays and Saturday through the end of the month, The Dark Room is home to “SF Sketchfest in the Mission,” a showcase of up-and-coming talents.

One such talent, The Birthday Boys, take the stage tonight. The above video is funny enough, but the thing that makes me think this could really be worthwhile is the following message I got last night from a comedy industry professional with every reason to be jaded and unimpressed:

Am currently at intermission for the TV Funhouse show and a group called The Birthday Boys opened. They were great (I was laughing a ton in the back – and I wouldn’t bs about comedy).

Showtime is 10:30pm. Also of note is an 8pm show featuring musical guest Uni and Her Ukelele.

[Administrative note: This is my first time using vodpod. Please drop me a line if it does anything weird.]

Video: Joe Strummer on Letterman

I have no regrets, I swear. But one thing that sometimes bums me out is I never got to see Joe Strummer perform live. This sticks in my craw because there was this one Sunday about eight years ago on which Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros played a free instore at Amoeba at 2pm, and then Jonathan Richman played at Bottom of the Hill later that evening. I lived in Sacramento at the time, and I had this big plan to drive to the city for the day, see Joe Strummer, hang out, and then go see Jonathan Richman. What a memorable day it would have been!

Unfortunately, I got a late start and skipped Amoeba altogether, thinking, “They play all the time, I’ll see them some day.” Joe Strummer died a year or so later I think, and I never got that chance. So all I have is this clip from Letterman of them performing “Johnny Appleseed.” It’s a great clip though.

Anyway, I told this story the other day, looked up the video, watched it multiple times today, and wanted to share.
