Google Maps Launches "Favorite Places" Advertising Campaign

google_map_humphry_slo

Google Maps has recently began a new advertising campaign, Favorite Places, which aims to tell you where local experts “like to go, and why, from their own perspectives.”  Of course, most of the San Franciscian local experts failed to look beyond Valencia St.  Some even looked over the Mission entirely, including our esteemed Mayor Gavin Newsom, who couldn’t even find one place he liked in the hood.

Besides Newsom, other notables on the list include Digg’s Kevin Rose, who is a fan on Monk’s Kettle and St. Francis, and Nate Query of The Decemberists, who hangs out at Revolution Cafe, The Make-Out Room, Bi-Rite Creamery, and Dolores Park.

Most of the other experts named the usual New York Times-endorsed haunts, like Foreign Cinema (named by 3 people), Tartine (2 people), Range, and Delfina (2 people).

I saw this junk on valencia and its stupid. I am waiting waiting waiting for someone to get photoed doing a drug deal/doing drugs/defecating on or near one of these things. What a stupid idea.

I agree…these things are so ugly. Are they really helping business?

  3. subby says:

These are incredibly annoying and ugly. The one by St. Francis is really in the way.

On the other hand, I suppose they provide jobs, as somebody has to go and install/move/remove them. I hope.

I just posted images of what the local “critics” thought of Kevin Rose’s take on the St. Francis.

I was wondering what these were, and knew I’d find the answer here. I first thought that there was a new fish-flavored ice cream or something.

    mmm, turbot sherbet! salmon sorbet?

(hey, why not, when there’s already bacon ice cream?…)

  8. slacker says:

Kevin Rose is lame lame lame. But St. Francis Fountain is not. Too bad the D-bag imagery of Rose has to be affiliated with my fav neighborhood burger. Shame on you Google.
