What is Austin like?

Our pal Corntard overheard one important theory:

Yeah but with Bill Murray, and Aziz.

(Bender’s rules!)

We're Not a Joke Reggae Band Anymore

Today’s episode of Backseat Beat features local band Still Flyin’. They used to be a joke reggae band, and everybody loved it, but now they’re just a regular really good rock ‘n’ roll band. Hopefully everybody still loves it.

The video shows them playing some songs (at least one of which indeed sounds a bit like LCD Soundsystem) under a freeway, and then they ride around in the back of an old Volvo with the show’s host and sort of answer some questions. It’s fun. Watch it here.

Austin-Style Breakfast Tacos

This is what’s up at Heart every weekend. This is what’s up. Austin-style breakfast tacos.

Sure, I saw Bill Murray, and the guy from Fucked Up tried to assault me, but the breakfast tacos still held strong as a top highlight of my trip to Austin.

And these ones, made in San Francisco, are even better. Call me a blasphemer if you want, but they are bomb, and there’s no line for brunch at Heart.

Also, I realize the quality of this picture leaves something to be desired, but I didn’t want to give away the whole experience. This is just a hint. Go see for yourself, if you want.

MORE AUSTIN HIGHLIGHTS

Monterrey: Mockinpott Rock!

One of my favorite photographers is this dude Jaime Martínez who takes a lot of low-res 3D pics and turns them into mesmerizing GIF animations. A couple weeks ago, Jaime attended MtyMx, a sort of anti-SXSW in Monterrey, and he’s been posting rad pictures ever since, including this shot of a Monterrey band called Mockinpott.

Mockinpott rules. They have kind of a Lost Sounds thing going on, and their label is giving away free digital downloads of all their records! Happy Easter!

SXSW Highlight: Andrew W.K. Bursts into Flame

See Andrew W.K. in concert if you haven’t already. It is fuuun!

(This concludes Mission Mission’s SXSW coverage. You’re welcome!)

SXSW Highlight: Fucked Up Frontman Tries to Punch Me in the Face

Actually, maybe he was trying to swipe my RAZR. You can see why, right?

P.S. He was dancing around on an outdoor stage in his underwear in near-freezing weather. AND he put a cup of ice down his drawers! That’s Fucked Up!

SXSW Highlight: Walker as Keyboard Stand

Everybody was doing it. Is this a thing? I never noticed before.

(Everybody except Surfer Blood. Surfer Blood had a real keyboard stand.)

SXSW Highlight: Bill Murray in a Jenny Lewis Hoodie

I wasn’t going to take a picture, but a hundred other people were doing it, and I knew you wouldn’t believe the part about the Jenny Lewis hoodie if I didn’t, so I did.

Later I lamented that I’d missed my chance to jump on Bill Murray and kiss him.

(Apparently he also did some bar tending while in Austin.)

SXSW Highlight: Remembering Jay Reatard

During the Shattered Records Family Showcase/Jay Reatard tribute, King Louie Bankston here got real for a moment. He said, “Jay understood my demons. He understood my demons, but he wouldn’t let me be a failure because of them.”

Maybe that’s true friendship? Understanding your friends’ demons and helping them to rise above them?

Louie’s set ruled, btw.

SXSW Highlight: Funnest Song To Dance To

Cheap Time, from Memphis, recorded and released this song probably about two or three years ago, at least. But “People Talk” still rules, and was by far the funnest song to dance to all week. I saw them right after Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings on Thursday, and this song was so fun to dance to, I stood in line a second time on Friday just so I could see them again and dance to it again! What a song!
