R.I.P. Matthew Africa

SF Weekly shares the horrible news about the famed East Bay DJ and KALX stalwart, as related by Africa’s sister:

My brother, Matthew Africa, was killed in a car accident on Monday afternoon. He and his beloved wife, Ha Le, were returning from a trip to Yosemite when their car collided with a big rig on a highway near Modesto. They tell us he died instantly; miraculously, she survived with multiple fractures. His absence is unbearable. Please keep our families in your thoughts and prayers.

I think everyone who knew him is probably pretty broken up right now, so I’ll just say that we’ve lost a really good soul and if it feels unfair, it’s because it is.

You get older, you get a real job, you dress different, but you still love Jawbreaker

Hola

Ash Reiter has been one of my favorite local bands since hella years ago, and now they’re about to release a big awesome new full-length called “Hola,” but it’s a little dependent on funding.

They’ve got a Kickstarter page set up where you can pledge money toward the release and be guaranteed a copy of the record in return. For a small pledge you get a digital version, for a slightly less small pledge you get a CD, and for a lil more you get the vinyl. Or there’s t-shirts, or you can get them to record a cover of your choice just for you, OR they’ll write and record an original song just for you, OR they’ll go skydiving or ballooning with you. Check it out!

Here’s a jam from the band’s most recent EP:

David Bowie vs. Talking Heads (and also ping pong)

From the invite:

Kick your Labor Day weekend off right! AMERICAN TRIPPS returns to RICKSHAW STOP for a night of Berlin-style ping pong, foosball, skeeball, dancing, drinking, romancing, and general merriment!

TRISTES TROPIQUES (of Haçeteria fame) will be on the decks, spinning a vinyl-only selection of hits by DAVID BOWIE and DAVID BYRNE (whose band TALKING HEADS will figure prominently into the proceedings) and a number of related acts.

RSVP and invite your friends! Oh and RSVP here for free beer!

Here’s what it’s like to see Conor Oberst at Bottom of the Hill

Like it’s 2002 or something.

I won’t get into any detail because I don’t want to spoil anything for people going to tonight’s show at the Regency Ballroom, but the Desaparecidos show last night at BOTH was siiiick. This photo by a Conor Oberst fan blog proves it happened.

Here, Conor weighs in on national politics:

Conor Oberst: I used to think that republicans were evil, but now I realize that the democrats are just as bad, and it’s really the corporations who run our country. Our two party system is broken, and we need some radical change.
Audience heckler: What happened to your pro-Obama stance?
Conor Oberst: 4 years. [via Faust on the Shore]

DJ Purple kicks off a brand-new Dance Karaoke party tonight in North Beach

It’s a trek, sure, but the debut of any new endeavor by DJ Purple will be special.

Peruse the songbook here. Read our in-depth interview with the award-winning DJ here. And finally… RSVP and invite your friends!

Here’s a pretty good punk song about Diet Coke

It’s called “Diet Coke”:

My Sunday sidewalk score was totally better than yours

I mean, just look at these gems!  Joy Division, New Order, Erasure, Depeche Mode, and even some BOOTLEG PRINCE (written on the back of that cassette is DNA LOUNGE ’94–haven’t listened to that one yet but it is sure to be epic).  The only reason I picked up the Alison Moyet is because the album was named ALF, although I am discovering that it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with my favorite alien.

Isn’t sidewalk music the best?  What’s some of the best discarded stuff that you’ve ever found just lying around here?

Epic hill bomb (with music by Thee Oh Sees and panoramic views of SF)

Whoa!

Thee Oh Sees are making a rare appearance at Bottom of the Hill this week btw.
