New documentary about Hole drummer Patty Schemel hits the Roxie this weekend

It’s called Hit So Hard, and when it premieres this weekend at the Roxie, Schemel and Hole bandmate Eric Erlandson (and the filmmakers) will be on hand to introduce it and and answer questions. And who knows, maybe Courtney will crash the party and turn it into a first-class shitshow! Girl power!

Ticket info here.

Kickstart the new Social Studies record!

One of our favorite bands to ever come out of the city is finally ready for you to hear all the songs they’ve been writing for the past year on a brand new full length LP, and they could definitely use your help!  And the rewards for this Kickstarter are pretty rad too.  I mean, imagine Social Studies coming out to play your house!  Check out all the details here!

If you’ve never heard Social Studies, they’re kind of impossible to describe, so just settle down and listen for a second:

Hip hop and ping pong, together at last!

This Friday On May 26th, American Tripps returns to the Secret Alley will take place at a location to be announced soon for an evening of hip hop and ping pong, with very special guest DJ Laser Tad on the decks. It’ll be like when the Wu Tang Clan combined chess and boxing! From the official invite:

It’s gonna be chill ’90s hip hop, upbeat, feel-good jams sure to go hand-in-hand with BERLIN-STYLE PING PONG ACTION. (Think De La Soul or “Feel Me Flow,” nahmean?)

Sounds good! RSVP and invite your friends!

Shannon and the Clams at El Rio tonight with Natural Child

We all know local heroes Shannon and the Clams rule. But I bet we don’t all know the same thing about Natural Child. They’re from Nashville, and they rule. Of the 69 bands I saw in Austin this past March, they were one of only three I gave a ★ to.

Here’s a fun song about white people:

And here’s a real jammer about wanting to smoke crack with your friends:

Global pop sensation Gotye dominates pub trivia in the Tenderloin (as well as international pop charts)

All Shook Down reports, via tipster:

So last night @ trivia this nerdy dude comes in and proceeds to answer every question right. I’m like who the fuck is this genius? We get to talking and he tells me he’s Wally and we end up chatting about old exotica and new wave records. This guy had an encyclopedic knowledge of music and was as cool as fuck. Turns out it was international pop star GOTYE!

Dang. Read on for more story and more pics. And be sure to go see Gotye tonight at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. (He was scheduled to play the Independent until demand necessitated that they move the show to an exponentially larger venue.)

Did your band play on the roof this weekend?

No? Well, then you really missed out! Next time!

“Rock music DJ night,” says the official invite (which also pointed us to the above Gun Club jam), “glam rock, powerpop, and more. 4 hours of rock music, dozens of beers on tap, no cover.” Tonight starting at 8:30 at Gestalt.

The weather’s too ugly to stray too far from home, so this might be just right (especially if you’re also planning to see the Jay Reatard movie at the Roxie right down the block, which you should). RSVP and invite your friends!

See a ‘live internet electronic performance’ at Haçeteria this Saturday night

The performance is by <body>. Not quite sure what this performance will entail, but maybe this podcast interview will explain.

In any case, Haçeteria is always the funnest thing to do in the Tenderloin on the first Saturday of the month. Tomorrow night’s party will doubtless be no different. RSVP and invite your friends!

Oldies Night is tonight!
