Unsilent Night Tomorrow in Dolores Park

Tomorrow, in Dolores Park: Unsilent Night!

Basically, there’s this composer from New York named Phil Kline who organizes mass boombox orchestras.  Here’s how it works: you show up at Dolores Park tomorrow at 7 p.m. with a boombox.  CDs and cassettes are distributed.  You pop one of these bad boys into your ‘box, everyone hits play at the exact same time, and BAM!  Music.

Performance art, people.  We’re going to play the song you lost your virginity to and you’re gonna like it.

That sounds really obnoxious. Throw in a few drum circles and it would be guaranteed ultra-super-dooper grow-up-already and get-a-life obnoxious.

I bet you’re a hoot at parties, MM.

This sounds like fun, or the beginnings of fun, or the makings for the beginnings of fun. Experiments can go awry in all sorts of excellent manners.

  2. Cranky Old Mission Guy says:

My sympathies are with Mission Mistaken, but only because I’m a cranky old guy — the event actually probably would be a lot of fun for anyone under thirty who doesn’t have a problem with being stupid drunk in public. Y’all are too young to remember John Cage, right? This is Performance Art like motel paintings are Winslow Homer.

The neighbors aint gonna like it, though… but fuck ‘em! (Isn’t that the official Mission attitude to anyone who tries to mess with our fun?) (deep sarcasm)

  3. Jocelyne says:

That is just like what the flaming lips used to do.

    • Jarvis says:

Phil Kline has been doing the Unsilent Night boombox performances since 1992, earlier than the Flaming Lips experiments circa mid 90s. These have always been enjoyable events in NYC. Curious to hear how the Mission version went.

my sparkler-bearing son and I saw them coming out of DP, didn’t seem that loud, or that interesting (other than the basket-headed flute player and the guys with sparkly light-up suits)
