Tube Wallets

I never know what to do with old bicycle inner tubes. I mean, you can only be Rambo for Halloween a couple of times before it gets old. Usually they end up in a box with CD spindles, strips of fabric, and other junk that falls under the nebulous “future art project” materials collection. Somebody should remind me that I don’t actually do art projects.

So it’s a good thing Mission Bicycle Company just got these swell mini-wallets that are made from recycled tubes. Seems like a cool idea for those of you interested in lowering your rubber footprint:

This super thin wallet is perfect for a night out or a training ride when you don’t need to carry every card you own.

  • Fits in your front pocket
  • Pocket for folded cash
  • Pocket for credit cards
  • Window for your ID

What do you do with your old tubes?

I See You GETTIN IT

Therese enumerates some things dudes yell at her when she rides past on her bike:

- “nice tits” (personal favorite)

- “ride safe, mama.”

- “hey, you! on the bike! yooo-hoo!”

- “i see you getting your exercise, little mama. i see you GETTIN IT. i see you GETTIN IT.”

Entirely pleasant, right? Wrong? Anybody got anything worse?

Get With It, SF Pussies

I thought a little Friday afternoon hate might do us all some good. (Like by giving us a chuckle or making us think.) Some advice from a reader regarding a stolen-bike story from earlier in the week:

Guess your little U-lock you’all (yes, ya’ll, hip-loser) carry so cleverly on your belt isn’t getting it done.  Ever been to NYC? Ever see their locks?  Yes, they same type of shit they used to chain-up King Kong.  Get with it, SF pussies.

Thanks for the tip!

Mission Sunday Streets Back Again This Sunday

Woah, didn’t this just happen less than a month ago? Well it looks like Sunday Streets in the Mission back for a second round this weekend. Not that anyone’s complaining.

Lots of cool free events will be scattered along the route including:

Circus Performance: Harrison Street at 20th (O’Connell H.S. lot)
Presented by Circus Bella

• 11:30-12:00 Parade down Harrison
• 12:00-1:00 Live circus performance

I caught Circus Bella last weekend at Yerba Buena and it was awesome. They set up their own circus ring and are accompanied with live music composed by local accordion hero Rob Reich. It’s going to be outdoors so you can bet that the trapeze will be hanging much higher than it was at their last performance at Amnesia.

Other than that, you can probably expect the usuals: purple robed guy on the tricycle with ginormo speakers, meligrosa snapping photos of her shoes, and a bunch of folks saying, “they should do this every week”.

Abandoned Cool Bike Etiquette

Reader subframe poses something of a moral quandary:

What do you do when there’s a cool bike locked up around the corner from your house for like 6 months?

It is pretty clear it’s been abandoned/forgotten. I’m certainly not about to steal a bike, although if I knew who’s it was I’d offer em money for it. Somebody WILL steal it eventually though, I’m sure.

I’d put up a post on CL, but that might simply alert thieves to a bike that’s ripe for stealing.

What do you do?

Public Service Announcement: Remember to Properly Secure Your Bicycle

If you don’t, a good Samaritan like reader Margo might write you a friendly note and leave it in your bottle cage.

When she left Casanova a while after, Margo noticed the bike was gone. She hopes, as do we, that it left with its rightful owner.

One-of-a-Kind Pake Bike Stolen Outside Pop's Yesterday

We’re trying our darnedest not to make every post bike-related today, but try and resist a plea such as this:

Please help me find my bike.  It was stolen outside of Pop’s on July 4th.  It’s a black pake with spray-painted baby blue and green stripes, with pake cranks, riser bars, and a basket.  Also stolen was the only saddle I’ve ever loved, a comfy women’s Terry.  It’s one-of-a-kind, and I’m hoping readers around the bay will keep an eye out.

Get in touch via the comments or missionmissionmission at gmail if you can help.

Plus, we’ve never had reason to mention how rad the Wave Organ is — and the Wave Organ is rad!

Cyclist Beaten and Stabbed for Being a Cyclist

Woah, guys.  Careful out there!  Word is out this morning that shortly after midnight earlier today a cyclist was riding his bike near the Broadway and Embarcadero intersection when he was confronted by three men whom, as Officer Albie Esparza explains, proceeded to “punch and stab him multiple times.”

Particularly worrisome is the fact that neither his belongings nor his bicycle were stolen, leading some to believe that he was targeted by these ne’er-do-wells solely due to the fact that he was riding a bicycle.  Taken in conjunction with the scumbag who recently mowed down 4 cyclists in psychotic rage, hopefully we aren’t seeing the beginning of some new violent anti-cyclist movement brewing.

SF Appeal has the scoop.
