Thank Fuck The Future's Here

So says M.I.A. in her Happy Election Day blog post, in which she also debuts this new video for S.U.S., her take on The Wire theme song (in collaboration with Baltimore’s own Blaqstarr). Be sure to stay tuned until the final seconds.

Hippie in a Good Way

We saw this band Antioquia at the Really Really Free Market on Saturday and liked them quite a bit. Then we checked them out online and found that not only are they comfortable with their bodies but also they’re playing again tonight at YBCA, as part of the opening night celebration for a big exhibition about the greening of urban spaces. They look hippie but are totally only hippie in a good way, I swear. Festivities begin at 6pm. Details.

Those Horns!

Sorry, one more Mazatlan item if you don’t mind. I finally found some footage of this band we saw down there called Banda Corona del Rey. Is this what goes on inside Roccapulco? If so, I’m there. For full effect, turn up the bass so you can really feel the tuba.

Strictly Bluegrass

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass has ended it is true, but your unquenchable thirst for bluegrass doesn’t have to go unwatered.  Atlas Cafe hosts Belle Monroe and her Bluegrass Boys tonight from 8-10pm.  It just might get your knee thumpin’ (to the beat), heart pumpin’ (blood), fingers twitchin’ (to play) and feet itchin’ (to dance).

Saturday Night Music Pick: Meat, Tits and Guns

Oakland’s Ryan Christopher Parks is playing some music as part of a reading at Cafe La Boheme tonight. The theme of the show is “Revolution 1968.” Says Ryan:

In preparation I’ve decided to rename some of my songs with titles like, “Hippies didn’t end the Vietnam War, I did”, “When the revolution comes I’m coming to your house with a crowbar”, and “Meat, tits, and guns”.

I can’t wait.

Update: P.S. It’s an early show, like 6ish.

Bob Dylan's New Collection is Badass

NPR has this exclusive stream of Bob Dylan’s new collection of outtakes. It is good. And during these troubling times it is particularly comforting. Link.

Saturday: Colossal Art Expo in Dolores Park

It’s time for the 9th Annual Expo for Independent Arts, and for the first time it’s being held outdoors, in our favorite place in the world, Dolores Park:

The 2008 Expo is an all-day extravaganza in Dolores Park featuring more than 100 Bay Area arts organization exhibitors, a couple dozen D.I.Y. workshop and education events, delicious food, a children’s activity area, and two stages for live music, performances, circus acts and hundreds of local artists and musicians. Attendees can browse tables staffed by local galleries, nonprofits, collectives and small businesses; present their portfolios; and join in workshops on grant proposals, censorship, arts marketing, underground art history, making a demo tape and more.

We’re looking forward to performances by Ralph Carney, SFC Double Dutch and Uni and Her Ukulele. See you there? (via funcheapSF)

Has Anyone Seen These Cute Instruments?

I found this poster in the window of the Mission Street Safeway yesturday. I love the little drawings, as well as the tear-stained face at the bottom of the poster. I hope they’ve been returned by now.

A Mighty Mighty Good Set of Salt and Pepper Shakers

The Mailbox Tees Blog is a primo showcase of weird little design oddities, and, we think you’ll agree, this Salt-N-Pepa salt and pepper shaker set is one of their best finds yet. Link.

Adios, 12 Galaxies

We asked Rhiannon to fill us in on what went down at 12 Galaxies’ swan-song show:

All space metaphors aside, 12 Galaxies went out with a big bang last night. StitchCraft opened the show up, all beautiful harmonies and hot chick with a fiddle, and there went beer one. After that it just got louder and sillier and more fun. During Big Light’s first set, the place got really packed, and really really hot, but no one cared. The Mikes and Willy at the door were having a great time, while Robert was shmoozing and dancing and answering the same questions a million times over. Someone whose face was a blur got up and played an acoustic set. (Their face probably wasn’t a blur in reality, but I was three beers in, not to mention the three margaritas at Velvet Cantina during dinner beforehand.) Then Big Light was on again, and someone had turned the amps up to 11. After that, it just became a jam fest. I got some video of some 10 people on stage, tearing the guitars apart, shouting “12 GALAXIES!” in some kind of rhythm, Robert got up and sang, first the 12 Galaxies song they were all making up, then some Grateful Dead-type stuff…

It was awesome, I left around 3, after KrOB put his famous neon sign in a cab and headed on home.

Thanks, Rhiannon! Can’t wait to see the video…
