Thurston Moore playing air keyboard at Four Barrel

Fresh off his inspiring performance last night at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Thurston Moore opted for a more subtle undertaking at one of our neighborhood’s highly-touted coffee shops this morning.  Fortunately, my savvy cousin Nushin was on the scene and snapped this pic so the exploit would not be lost to posterity:

Suspicions confirmed by the highly agitated and blushing barista. We were too shy to invite him to the knockout tonight for the sonic youth cover band.

How rad would that have been?!?  Thurston, if you see this, come to the Knockout tonight!

(Thanks Lauren and Nushin!)

Sonic Youth cover band playing Debaser ’90s alternative rock dance party at the Knockout this Saturday night

Will they play the Simpsons theme? Or maybe they’ll just play the one Sonic Youth song everybody actually likes and then get the fuck off the stage? That’d be a riot. RSVP and invite your friends here.

Two titans

Seen at the Make-Out Room around 1:30AM Tuesday night: DJ Purple checking out the tail end of DJ Primo‘s slow jams set! Purple strolled in and just regarded his fellow beloved San Francisco DJ for about 15 minutes, subtly nodding his head in appreciation.

It was even better than the Don DeLillo/Bret Easton Ellis face-off in this month’s issue of The Believer.

Purple’s karaoke dance party returns to Jack’s tonight around 9, and Primo’s 2 Men Will Move You party hits Amnesia this Saturday night.

Talking Heads tribute band at the Knockout tonight

I’m a teeny bit skeptical, because David Byrne is a seriously tough thing to reproduce, but two trusted sources recommended this show independently of each other, so there you have it.

(Thanks, Rob and Carina!)

Brass Menazeri: balkan brass first Thursdays coming to the Mission

If you think New Orleans is where you’ll find the best brass bands, you might want to take a second look at Southeastern Europe.

Balkan music is high-energy, virtuosic brass/percussion at it’s best and it has been finding it’s way into more American acts. You may have heard the influence in the music coming from that moody New Mexico kid Beirut, who is apparently more popular now than the actual Lebanese city which bares the same name.

San Francisco has its own Balkan Brass band, Brass Menazeri, who have been tearing it up for years. In fact, they are probably one of the only groups of their caliber in the states. Their shows are dancey and fun. Here’s a clip of them on Chasing the Moon.

If you’re into this stuff, starting October they are performing first Thursdays at El Valenciano. You know, that place you always walk by and wonder, “what goes on in there, anyway?”. Turns out, it’s actually a beautiful room with a lot of charm and an excellent dance floor.

Thursday, October 6, 2011 Brass Menazeri – now every first thursday!!!!

Here’s what’s great about the slow jams party at the Make-Out Room every Tuesday night

First you arrive and get a drink and sit at a booth with your friends for a bit. Then Primo gets up there (see him?) and spins something that either fries your brain or melts your heart:

And you get up and dance, and you have the time of your life. And that’s what’s great about the slow jams party (AKA Lost & Found) at the Make-Out Room every Tuesday night.

New video by Girls shot in SF stars girls you might recognize from around SF

And Girls make no bones about liberally borrowing a bunch of Nor-Cal road trip imagery (and a female lead) from that gorgeous Dominant Legs video from a few weeks back:
