Time'll Tell (Buffalo/B-17 Mashup)

val-st-wall-on-flickr-photo-sharing

This is probably one of the better pieces of art we’ve seen on the Valencia Street Art Wall in a long time: larger than life, whimsical, kind of unsettling.

Johnny0 at Burrito Justice did some legwork and determined that it’s the work of one Jesse Hazelip, a presumably local artist specializing in animal-weaponry mashups. Link.

What’s more, the artist has a blog on which there’s a very nice behind-the-scenes look at the installation of this very installation. See it here.

Who Wants New Bike Lanes?

bike_network_56gif

It’s been 973 days since San Francisco got a new bike lane, but with the lifting of a court-ordered injunction imminent, 2009 is poised to be the year of lots of new bike lanes and other improvements, as indicated in the above graphic.

The thing is, in order for all of these changes to be realized, the effort needs boots on the ground. To that end, SFBC tonight at 6:30pm hosts an all-member meeting at First Baptist Church of San Francisco (near Market and Octavia) at which we’ll learn what kind of concrete tasks members and concerned citizens can undertake in order to push these initiatives through. Link.

Everything's Broken

I always mean to take more pictures of piles of junk on the sidewalk, but often neglect to. Luckily, le is on top of things. Link.

Update: I was so busy poking fun at the Weekly, I neglected to dig a little deeper. Turns out this photo is but one of many in Elly’s set devoted to discarded chairs on the streets of SF: chairs.

Also, this reminds me of Eric Slatkin’s payphones.

Potato Towers (Lasagna Method)

Tree from the Free Farm Stand yesterday told us about potato towers:

As people must know by now I am excited about planting potatoes this year and last week we built and planted four towers in 2 gardens. On Tuesday a few friends showed up at Treat Commons and we installed the tall wire mesh potato tower there. A lot of kids from the park came in the garden to help and they mixed up soil and mulch and added it to the tower. Later that day we went to the Secret Garden with the Jamestown Center kids and planted potatoes in trash cans with their bottoms cut off.

Read on for lots more detail about how it’s done, including explanation of the lasagna bit.

Sunset Idea House Thieves Power from Neighbors

It’s like when the punks in the Youth Brigade movie thieved credit card numbers in order to make the long-distance calls necessary to book a US tour. DIY! Sunset Magazine — oi, oi, oi! Link.

Let's All Sink with California When it Falls into the Sea

Once upon a time, all the good punk songs were about how great London was or how great New York City was or how great LA was. Growing up in Northern California, I felt left out.

Youth Brigade‘s “Sink with California” was probably mostly about LA too, but the chorus was inclusive enough for me. So I loved singing along to it, and I loved being proud of where I was from, and I loved Youth Brigade.

But there’s more to Youth Brigade’s story than just that song. They started a seminal punk label and got in adventures and did some other stuff presumably, and it’s all documented in Let Them Know: The Story of Youth Brigade and BYO Records, which screens tonight at the Roxie at 7:15 as part of the San Francisco Independent Film Festival.

AND THEN, there’s an afterparty at Thee Parkside at which Youth Brigade and Filthy Thieving Bastards perform! (And you get a discount when you show your ticket stub from the movie.)

Will Youth Brigade play my song? I hope so.

Cool Dads

Hipster-related comment of the week, courtesy of Aaron Mayfield-Sunshine:

hipsters cannot be 30 or 40 something. 32 is the max! after that you become a cool dad.
