Linea Caffe: Espresso and waffles and salads and being a part of the neighborhood

I ate these three waffles at Linea Caffe yesterday and they were all the bomb. (Clockwise from top: desserty waffle with chocolate and coconut and macadamia, egg souffle waffle with cheese and herbs, PASTRAMI SANDWICH waffle with pastrami cooked right into it.) The cappuccino was awesome too.

Today, Eater SF published an in-depth interview with founder Andrew Barnett. Here is an excerpt:

What’s it like being in such a central location? I couldn’t have dreamed of a better neighborhood. It’s this fantastic convergence of old and new. It’s exciting. You don’t have everything assimilated or gentrified. You’ve got the dirt under your fingernails and you’ve got the excitement of the new settlers. This area is very soulful. You’ve got Mission Street, which is almost Central American with its sounds and smells, and then you’ve got Valencia with all the great restaurants and new development. There was this worry when we first opened that the locals wouldn’t like us, that we’d come across as another upscale coffee bar, but it’s been great, the community has be really supportive and it feels a little bit like we’re a lynchpin between the two streets.

Less than a month left for KronnerBurger at Bruno’s

It’s been tons of fun, but the KronnerBurger crew are moving on to bigger and better things. Inside Scoop reports:

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nearly a year since Chris Kronner kicked off the Kronnerburger era within a dark, sultry sideroom at the Mission District club. Since then, he’s expanded service to six nights a week (closed Saturdays), all while continuing to do pop-ups around San Francisco and Oakland. But now, the last day of KronnerBurger at Bruno’s will be November 22.

“I never had the intention of it going on as long as it has,” says Kronner, noting that the Bruno’s stay was supposed to be more of a temporary thing, but locking down a permanent location of his own took a long time — and as he puts, “it’s still taking a long time.” That said, he’s getting close on an Oakland location. It’s not a done deal yet, but they’re further down the road than any other prior possibility. So stay tuned.

They intend to keep doing popups around SF though, phewf! Read on.

Giant condo complex may replace Walgreens and Burger King at 16th and Mission

Mission Local reports:

A developer submitted preliminary plans for 351 new condos with the San Francisco Planning Department on October 18.

To make room for the new buildings, which are described as between five and ten stories in the Preliminary Project Assessment, the developer plans to raze several businesses, including Walgreens, Burger King and Hwa Lei Market. A nightclub and a vacant Dollar Store on the site would also go.

They aim to beautify and improve the quality of life in the area, and make the BART plaza a more inviting hub, and they say no residents will be displaced. Read on for more info, comments by locals, blueprints and more.

I think it’s cool as long as they name the place “Royal Gate” in honor of Cranky Old Mission Guy and days gone by.

Get your Halloween started early this Saturday with SMITHSFITS at the Knockout and THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT at El Rio!

Whenever Halloween falls on a weekday, such as a Thursday this year, there’s always some uncertainty concerning the proper time to celebrate.  Purists dress up on the actual day, some people choose the weekend before, others the weekend after, and some determined folks just decide that the whole week is Halloween and go, “fuck you, imma treat myself” while they come to work in costume every single day.

Luckily for those looking to get an early start this weekend, there’s a double dose of Halloween dance parties this Saturday!  If darkness is your forte, head over to Smithfits at the Knockout:

SMITHSFITS is back for our 3rd Halloween costume contest. $100 for first place. Drinks for second place.

The Google Bus: “If you want an iPhone, a Facebook profile, and Google Maps, this is part of the price you’ve gotta pay”

That’s the opinion of one insufferable tech dude* interviewed for KALW’s Google Bus Show, which fortunately offers a far more balanced take (than the privileged notion quoted in the title) on the recent phenomenon that’s become a symbol of the gentrification and influx of wealth currently reshaping the city. It’s a good listen; folks from the neighborhood, city officials, and tech companies themselves all contribute different viewpoints to illustrate why the issues at hand might not be solved by simply banning the corporate shuttles from city streets.

*Of course, what insufferable tech bro fails to realize is that perhaps not everyone is interested in having an iPhone, Facebook profile, and Google maps. While I can’t speak for that segment of the population, as I have and get great use out of all three of those products every day, their needs have to be considered as well.

Listen here.
