This Dance Floor Got Burnt Up

Gary Wu, ladies and gentlemen. Live at the Make-Out Room.

FIVE DUDES IN EVERY DIRECTION

Quite possibly the greatest incidental license plate ever, spotted in the SOMA on a Saturday night, and hopefully descriptive of exactly what was happening at the moment inside of that particular Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Kinda sounds like the premise of the climax scene (starting at 3:00) of the second-greatest music video ever, the BANNED VERSION of “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, available for your viewing pleasure below:

SF Zinefest Benefit at DEBASER

You remember zines, right?  They were the blogs before there were blogs.  If Allan was born 10 years earlier, Mission Mission might have been a zine!  I think we can all agree that zines are awesome.  After all, if I hadn’t been reading Cometbus back in high school, I probably would have chosen Cal Tech over Berkeley, and the world would now be in the grip of the tyrant who managed to abscond the Lambda Laser from my quantum physics lab.  So, luckily, you don’t have to worry about that.

Anyway, SF Zinefest is a rad event this weekend in the Hall of Flowers at GG Park where zine authors congregate so anyone can check out all their recent work.  In addition to the totally worthwhile experience of checking it out yourself, you can also support the scene by dancing to 90′s music at the Knockout, as DEBASER is hosting a benefit this Saturday night for the SF Zinefest.  So although you can get in free before 11pm by simply wearing a flannel, DON’T!!!  Wear a hoodie or something instead and help support the Zinefest!

Planet Booty At The Blue Macaw 9/11

Woah woah woah… having a show on 9/11? Isn’t it too soon? Intergalactic dance band Planet Booty has the answer:

FYI I will continue posting Planet Booty’s shows as long as they keep making these amazing promotional videos.

Cell Dancer

Laughing Squid posted a delightful video of this cell phone getting down in front of the Mission St. MetroPCS:

He may be puffy, but he’s definitely not lazy. The person inside this inflatable cellphone suit posseses an incredible amount of energy, because he’s been observed dancing vigorously for hours on end in front of a MetroPCS cellphone shop on Mission Street in San Francisco. Work it, dude!

In other news, making an animated gif these days is a fucking pain in the ass.

Women Dancing on the Women's Building

MM reader Andy Miller was walking down 18th Street last Thursday when he spotted a group of women dancing on–wait for it–the Women’s Building.  Soooooo meta!  I especially like the part where one of the dancers braces herself on a pole protruding from the roof while performing some sort of aerial cycling maneuver.

Unfortunately, Andy couldn’t figure out exactly what was going on, but he did manage to shoot some great video.  Anyone have any ideas?

Dancing on the Corner

Queena Kim over at the Bay Citizen yesterday published a look at TURF dancing, a thing the kids are doing in Oakland that’s apparently very popular in Europe thanks to YouTube:

“The hits started picking up in the U.S. a week or two ago,” Savion said. “While TURF dancing started in Oakland, to me YouTube has taken TURF beyond the neighborhood, and it’s becoming a global phenomenon.”

Read on (and watch the above video).

Update: Props to Youth Uprising for facilitating the movement.

Get Your Gamelan On

It’s been a too long since Gamelan Girl last graced MM with her presence.  Luckily, Gamelan is coming to the Mission this weekend for the first time that I can remember so you can all finally see what the fuss is about.

Dance Mission (you know, the studio above the Chinese/Donut place on 24th and Mission that sometimes causes you to think the world is ending when you walk by, only to realize that people are just banging on giant drums up there) is hosting the Gadung Kasturi Balinese Dance group this Friday and Saturday at 8pm each evening.  Tickets are available for a very reasonable $12 at Brown Paper Tickets.

Chill out to the soothing, meditative rhythms and chimes of this ancient Asian art form.  Smoke a bowl or something if that’s what it takes (Disclaimer:  MM never advocates drug use) because you’re going to want to zone out to this contagious groove.  If that’s not enough, 8-year old dance sensation Chandra Ayu Davies will be there too, dazzling us with her moves.  Try something different before you head over to the Mission Creek Festival this weekend!

Mission Community Block Party This Saturday

Mission Community Block Party takes place this Saturday, June 19th 11am-3pm in front of Revolution Cafe on 22nd and Bartlett. There should be lots of food, live music, and dance performances. Full details here.

Also, after Sirron Norris and CUBA made nice last week regarding the mural on that corner, it looks like they will be inviting YOU to take part of their new mural collaboration! Please try to resist the urge to hide a bunch of dongs in there.

Come paint a piece of our new community mural! Anyone and everyone can come paint their part of a mural! A blank canvas for you to paint your piece of the Mission! Artists Sirron Norris and CUBA will return afterward to tie it together into a unified mural. All are welcome to contribute their part of a mission mural! On the side of Revolution Cafe.

[Thanks for the heads up, J-Lub]
