Will T.S.A. agents be searching you as you enter Outside Lands this weekend?

Not to freak everyone the fuck out or anything, but it’s definitely a possibility:

With little fanfare, the agency best known for airport screenings has vastly expanded its reach to sporting events, MUSIC FESTIVALS, rodeos, highway weigh stations and train terminals. Not everyone is happy.

“The problem with T.S.A. stopping and searching people in public places outside the airport is that there are no real legal standards, or probable cause,” said Khaliah Barnes, administrative law counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington. “It’s something that is easily abused because the reason that they are conducting the stops is shrouded in secrecy.”

T.S.A. officials respond that the random searches are “special needs” or “administrative searches” that are exempt from probable cause because they further the government’s need to prevent terrorist attacks.

So does this mean you should leave all your “accoutrements” behind when you venture out to GG Park this weekend to bask in the delicate crooning of Paul McCartney? More importantly, will you still be able to smuggle a tallboy disguised as a burrito into the festival???

Read on.

Get your Jack off

You’ve probably heard that Adobe Books had to leave their 16th Street location recently, and relocated to a new location on 24th Street. You’ve probably also heard that Jack Spade, an upscale retail store that is a spin off of Kate Spade which is a subsidiary of Liz Claiborne, was planning to move into Adobe’s old location well before Adobe had even publicly conceded to leaving. (For reference, check out Kevin’s reporting here)

Well, a bunch of “Valencia Corridor” businesses are opposing Jack Spade as a formula retailer brand from a multinational company, and therefore not a part of the Mission community. The opening of a store like this will pave the way for more companies to take root in the neighborhood, and push out the local businesses. Makes sense to me.

I’d also add that they really only appeal to a certain kind of well moneyed, overly groomed young urban professional scenester, but that’s pretty much the Valencia Corridor in a nutshell.

Anyway, you can sign their petition here, and the event should be fun, with proceeds going to “support the Stop Jack Spade campaign”.

CONTEST: Win tickets to ‘LCD Soundsystem Is Playing at My House’!

American Tripps, the ping pong party that got its start right here in the Mission, is celebrating its 2-year anniversary this weekend! Here’s the deal:

The first weekend in August marks our 2-year anniversary of throwing Berlin-style ping pong parties in San Francisco, so we wanted to do something big to celebrate. Then we caught wind of North American Scum, the acclaimed LCD Soundsystem cover band based here in SF, and we figured it’d be awesome to book them and use the occasion to pit LCD against Daft Punk, their mentors — and current kings of the airwaves.

So: dance party, DJs, live band, Berlin-style ping pong, drinks, food truck out front, foosball and skeeball upstairs in the mezzanine.

Sounds awesome! LCD Soundsystem rules! RSVP and invite your friends!

To win a pair of tickets, relay your best LCD Soundsystem- or Daft Punk-related anecdote in the comments sections below. Winner will be decided based on merit. Contest ends Friday at noon.

Virgil’s Sea Room’s patio opens grandly tonight!

Meet the creator of PARKing Day and the city’s first parklet this Sunday at Brava

Although a somewhat controversial subject considering the limited parking spaces in the city, pretty much everyone who doesn’t have to worry about finding a parking spot for their vehicle has nice things to say the whole phenomenon of PARKing Day and parklets.  Well, here’s your chance to chat with the guy who started it all:

Join us Sunday, July 21 as Design Cycle welcomes Matthew Passmore, co-founder of Rebar Group, for a tactile and conversational exploration of urban prototyping, an emerging movement that makes city design more innovative, collaborative and immediate.

Come early to experience an urban prototyping parklet with modular furniture, stage, live music and bicycle street food. The Urban-Proto-Parklet party begins at 6pm. Matthew takes the stage at 7pm to help us re-imagine public space.
