Google Respects Your Privacy (If You’re a Colonel)

We all know that Google Street View values the privacy of the luchador crowd. But it turns out Google also hides the faces of colonels with secrets whose factories convert chickens into weapons of mass destruction tasty snacks, as we see here on Duboce & Guerrero (thankfully not in the Mission).

The irony here: given their questionable meat content (and uncomfortable proximity to taquerias), Taco Bell really is the one that ought to be blurred out.  But it’s a bell, not the dog, so I am not sure how effective that would be. Or maybe it’s a witness protection program for the Colonel?

Tao Cafe on Guerrero Serves Great Vietnamese, Is Not Epicly Crowded Like Sunflower

I lived down the block from Tao Cafe for years and never went in. Mistake!

My new favorite meal is their vegetarian “Spring-to-Summer” rolls filled with tofu and warm vermicelli, followed by the “Sweet Mekong Bass” coconut curry dish, all washed down with a cold Ba Moui Ba. The duck confit (pictured) looks pretty good too.

And check out the sweet view from the front window.

Vegan Lamb Soup Tonight

I’ve never had vegan lamb anything, but if there’s anything I love as much as being vegan, it’s eating lamb. And Vegansaurus thinks this is going to be pretty good:

Brand new soup stand, Relais, is premiering tonight (Sunday, February 6th) in the Mission on the corner of 20th and Valencia. They’re serving up vegan lamb soup and it promises to be fucking deeeeelicious because these people are talented chefs for real.

Read on. (Hopefully their narrow time window doesn’t conflict with Glee.)

Wouldn’t It Be Cool If There Were A Restaurant in There?

On the second floor, with the big windows?

Vietnamese Street Food on Valencia Tonight!

Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!  And what better way to celebrate than with Vietnamese Street Food?

So inspired by the sidewalk dining and street food we ate in Vietnam, we have recreated the experience here in our hometown — complete with small tables, even smaller stools, fresh Vietnamese condiments, Cambodian pop music, and delicious food of course! We’re serving up Vietnamese comfort foods such as stuffed chicken wings with a thai chili sauce and crab sautéed glass noodles.

Drop by our terrace at a private residence near 20th and Valencia to grab some grub on the go or take a seat at one of our mini-tables to do it up, Saigon-style. We’ll tweet our exact location on February 3rd; follow @littleknockand @kitchensidecar to receive the tip.

I might not be able to make this tonight, but I expect a detailed report from the field, readers!

Southern Pacific Brewing Company Coming to Treat Avenue

Mission Local reports:

In the same north eastern Mission District area where big-name breweries like Hamm’s and Rainier once stood, Anthony LaVia plans to open the Southern Pacific Brewing company, a new brew pub and restaurant that promises to return the Mission to its brewing days.

But while LaVia, 33, envisions the revival of the Mission as a hub in which the Rainier Brewery used to produce up to 350,000 barrels per year, he’s taking his plan one step further:  once opened, Southern Pacific Brewing would become the first brewery in San Francisco to host a dual license, allowing it to produce beer to sell on site as well as to other commercial clients — such as bars and restaurants.

Dual license! Epic! Read on. (Thanks, Jacob!)

Reed’s Extra Ginger Brew Also Comes in Champagne-Style Bottles

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you want to drink something festive without getting trashed. Reed’s Extra seems to be a popular choice in the neighborhood and elsewhere, but I only just learned Rainbow stocks huge foil-wrapped bottles of the stuff! Extra festive! And it sure kicks the ass of Martinelli’s Apple Cider, right?

The Best Veggie Sandwich in Town?

We Built This City just discovered yet another entrant in this age-old contest: The Golden Beet Loaf Sandwich at Atlas Cafe. They even go so far as to say it’s better than the widely beloved Plant Cafe Plant Burger, which also leans heavily beet. Do you believe it?

Dubious Pun-Named Chinese Joint Moving In

I don’t think I like this: the space previously occupied by Papa Potrero’s Pizza on 24th and Potrero will soon be “Wok and Go”.

It’s not that I have a problem with Chinese food or puns. In fact, if I ever open a Vietnamese restaurant I plan on calling it “Phở- geddabout it!” or “Banh Mi? Banh YOU!” (Just to be clear, it will also have a mob theme. Servers will wear track suits and slicked-back hair.)

It’s just that most puns are based on an existing phrase or premise. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the term “Walk and Go”. A simple Google search confirms this. May I suggest, “Go for a Wok”? “All Wok and No Play”? Can’t go “Wong” with those.

Woah. So that’s what it sounds like when an entire neighborhood groans simultaneously.
