"So, is it a Sweet Ride?"

sweet_ride

I was stoked to see more non-hallucinogenic pastries being sold in Dolores Park this weekend but was shocked to discover that it wasn’t being done illegally.  Permits?  What?  You mean I’m paying tax n’ shit for cupcakes?  My world is crushed.

But seriously, the cupcake I had was incredibly delicious.  And, most importantly, the truck has spinning-hubcaps, which pretty much makes it the most awesome thing this side of Twin Peaks.

Battle of the Empanadas

Tecolote-ad

If you couldn’t get a ticket to SF Food Wars Mac n’ Cheese battle, the Battle of the Empanadas will likely be just as fattening.

I’m putting my money on Chile Lindo.

Rumormonger: Wine Bar Coming to the American Apparel Space?

Mission Comics and Art’s blog dropped a little rumor 2 months ago** that a wine bar is looking at moving into 988 Valencia, also known as the former prospective American Apparel location:

“This particular landord has two adjoining properties that he’d prefer to lease together, if he can’t do that, lease to two separate business at the same time. Right now, he has a wine bar interested in leasing the larger space with the roll up door, which could be very complementary to my business and another incentive to stay open later then the typical comic bookstore or art gallery for that matter.” (link)

We’ve been hearing this rumor at Mission Mission for a few months now, but no one was able to ever substantiate it.  We’ve even heard talks of indoor bicycle parking at the bar; maybe that rumor is true too?

I really hope they serve Little Boomey.  That would be classy.

** Sorry, I’m such a bad “journalist.”  I should have seen this sooner.

Chocolate Babka: The New Best Thing in the World

08-11-09_1534

Like black-and-white cookies and marble rye, the chocolate babka was something that to me only existed in Seinfeld reruns. But now it is real.

I know, I know, this photo is terrible, but it couldn’t wait. Pal’s Take Away is now, on occasion I’m guessing, offering what they’re billing as “Straight Outta Brooklyn Green’s Chocolate Babka.” It is the new best thing in the world, cakey and fluffy, and crispy where it counts, and full of ribbons of chocolatey richness.

I was too busy stuffing it into my face to bother to ask whether they make it themselves or they’re shipping them in from Brooklyn or what, not that it makes a difference. I had one on Saturday and went back on Tuesday for four more.

The Lactose Intolerant Strong-arm Xanath Into Serving Non-Dairy Flavors

Now that Xanath has fallen, will the red tide of veganism put soy queso on every pizza at Pi Bar? (via vegansaurus!)

Pop-Up Thai/Vietnamese Brunch at Doc's Clock

3783751768_55b28ef765

That’s right! Thai/Vietnamese Brunch! At Doc’s Clock for god’s sake! Mission Mission pal Linda L. has the rundown:

Heads up!
There is a new pop up eatery on Sunday’s at Doc’s Clock, a little enterprise called Three Papayas.

Thai / Vietnamese brunch. Cheap as all hell, only $8 an entree.
The menu changes every week but the Three Papayas Salad is always featured. All home made, all fresh ingredients!

Nice place to duck out of the sun, have a morning cocktail and eat.

Took the liberty of writing down last Sunday’s menu. You can friend them on Facebook for more info.

-Bunny Chao: South African Indian Curry
-Three Papaya Salad
-Pork Ramen
-Vietnamese Crepe (pork and Shrimp or vegetarian)

A couple of weeks ago they feature pork dumplings and Chicken Pho

Noon to 4pm

I can’t wait!

The first Yelp review adds that the enterprise is the brainchild of “underground superstar chef” Tawei, formerly of guerilla-ish operations at Yamo, Bender’s and Thee Parkside.

Update: Pork Ramen photo by tackyy.

Saturday Sidewalk Planting and Mural Completion Celebration at Mission Pie

c6e

Mission Pie has a lot going on this weekend. Tomorrow morning they’re planting the sidewalk along the 25th Street side of the building, and then they’ll have a little celebration of the completion of that task as well as the completion of the mural out back. On Sunday afternoon, they invite everyone inside to celebrate the completion of the interior, and say a big thanks to the folks and firms that helped finish it up.

Complete details here.

Thanks, Ashleigh!

Bender's Kitchen Staff Update: Good News

08-06-09_1922

Behind the counter three nights a week these days is none other than my man Justin, one of the geniuses that helped make the Rosamunde Sausage Grill/Toronado Burger Tuesday tradition so god damn amazing. Justin rules, and the fact that he’s at Bender’s now is a good thing for everyone.
