Awkwardly serenading Mission ladies

For Valentines Day, I bring you this Blammos video of Mission women scanning for an exit route.

Girls will always love you

Happy Valentine’s Day! RIP Whitney.

There are a hundred people outside who can’t get in to see Lana Del Rey because Amoeba is at capacity – and this guy is browsing the used VHS section

Love your work, guy. Hope you found that copy of Tango and Cash you were looking for.

UPDATE: Some pics of the scene inside.

Ezra Furman (formerly of Ezra Furman and the Harpoons) now a solo artist living in the Mission

You might remember Ezra Furman from this song about sunglasses from a few years back. Now he’s a Mission resident, and his solo debut dropped this week.

You can listen to the A-side for free on his website, and you can attend his release show this Saturday night at Hotel Utah.

Average height of Mariachi musician: 72″

With hats, that is.

Spam jam

My sister (pictured) made a song out of a bunch of spam comments her blog Adventures in Audio got, and it rules:

(Now excuse me while I go do something similar with everything Cranky Old Mission Guy has ever said. It will be much longer.)

The alpha and omega of electronic dance music

Haçeteria is my favorite place to dance. I know it’s at Deco Lounge in the Tenderloin, but it’s worth the trip, for real. Plus, this month’s special guest sounds like a party unto himself:

One of the Bay Area’s top gear gurus, Breath Control, aka Greg Zifcak creates original tunes that are a modern take on vintage house and techno sounds from decades ago. Zifcak excels in steering around the unpredictable bend, obscured by the fog and darkness. Past work in Eats Tapes and Wav Dwgs exemplify Zifcak’s masterful programming of crisp percussion and hazy jack-your-body synths.

RSVP and invite your friends!

Lastly, here’s a special new mix by resident DJ Tristes Tropiques to help get you pumped:

I love this band. Don’t forget, you can still download a digital copy of the record for free.

Thrillhouse Records, that record store way out Mission Street you barely knew existed

The Bold Italic takes a look inside:

The vinyl carried in the shop varies wildly in genre and you can generally count on leaving with some unexpected finds. On one particular visit, I scored a long lost Black Sabbath album I’d been looking for, a collection of classic country LPs, and a couple 45s by local bands that have since broken up. The house stereo is just as eclectic. I’ve heard “God Save the Queen” followed by a Billy Idol hit and a Billy Childish ballad. This wide cultural smattering extends to the name of the shop itself – which was taken from a segment of a Simpsons Christmas episode in which Bart is caught shoplifting. Sounds pretty punk to me.
