Kanye West as Nobunny

Our buddy Allie put together this genius bit of madness. Dang. Can you imagine if Kanye and Nobunny were to actually collaborate? The world would never be the same.

Say YesYesYes to indie mags and music tonight at The Knockout

Yes Yes Yes Magazine, independent publishing, san francisco, arts and culture magazine

YesYesYes is a ripping new SF arts and culture magazine that is throwing a benefit show tonight at The Knockout at 9pm to raise funds to roll out their latest issue. The set list includes Lilac, Lemon Pretend, Tint, and Dj’s Lariq, and William Keihn, and sliding scale admission starts at $5 with all funds going to benefit the magazine. This is a great chance to check out some cool bands while supporting a new local publisher — they’ve already earned 75% of their Kickstarter goal and the deadline is this Saturday, so check it out if you can!

Stolen burrito moment

When Mount Eerie‘s frontman launched into a droning minutes-long noise solo, the keyboard player took the opportunity to crouch down and eat a big foil-wrapped Mission burrito. Smart. Gotta grab those moments where you can when you’re on tour I guess.

Surfing to ‘El Farolito’

I ran into garage rock icon Tim Foster at the Nar reunion the other night, and ever since I’ve been on a ’90s garage rock kick. I stumbled upon this Trashwomen classic just now.

A better ode to our favorite burrito than the chopped and screwed Mariah Carey hit? Time will tell.

‘Boom Boom Boom Boom!!’ even better with a live sax solo

Sorry I didn’t get any digital evidence, but DJ Purple just now at Make-Out Room busted out a bangin’ sax solo during a musical break on this classic Vengaboys jammer. I was pretty floored. You’re just gonna have to try to imagine what it was like.

OR, sing “Boom Boom Boom Boom!!” at the next DJ Purple party. (Which, of course, is Thursday at Jack’s.)

Crowd surfing is always better when there’s a chandelier involved

Carlos snapped this gem at Diary on Saturday. I gotta start going to Diary more often.

Malts shop

Here’s one of the raddest songs by a local band I’ve heard all year:

And lucky for us, Terry Malts are playing a free show tonight at 8pm sharp at Afterlife. There will also be beer, according to the subliminal messages in this flyer:

Furthermore, as you can see, it’s a benefit for Yes Yes Yes, some kind of rad new magazine. Liz of Yes Yes Yes explains:

The show’s a fundraiser for our magazine’s second issue, and we’re gonna be selling beer and maybe wine and/or some alcoholic punch of some sort (a good one, don’t worry) and will have a computer set up so people can donate to our kickstarter or just an old fashioned giant jug for additional donations.

The aforementioned Kickstarter is here if you’d like to get a head start on donating.

For more on why Terry Malts are great, check out a lovely Bay Bridged feature from a few weeks back right here.

Oldies Night is tonight and it’s gonna be nasty!

Best rapper in the Mission

The Best Rapper

Karaoke at Jack’s last night was continuously awesome, mostly because of DJ Purple, the classic triple-threat (DJ, backing vocals, saxophone solos.)  But I didn’t feel comfortable calling it “art” until this girl got up there and crushed Sorry Miss Jackson with nary a stutter. In case anyone missed it, she returned half an hour later to close down the bar (lights on) with Nicki Minaj’s latest radio hit (again flawless.)

Cheers, mystery rapper!

Karina Denike interview on Slumming It

Local comedian Emily Heller has a cool radio show called “Slumming It” on FCC Free Radio with Marcello Fama.

Turns out she’s pals with local singer Karina Denike, who you might know from the ’90s 3rd wave ska band Dance Hall Crashers, and had a great interview with her on a recent show. Hear them chat about the golden age of East Bay punk, opening for MC Hammer, how the Rite Spot launched a ton of awesome bands, and the Dance Hall Crashers mysterious lez-appeal.

On a related note, Sunday we went out to the Riptide to see Karina Denike sing with the Cottontails. Allan kept raving about the DHC’s remix of Rancid’s “I Wanna Riot” (which she didn’t remember and actually turned out to be the Stubborn Allstars… OOPS), Karina told us a pretty crazy story about getting mugged in the Mission in the ’90s, and we’re pret-ty sure Fat Mike from NOFX was hanging out for a minute.

MP3: Karina Denike on Slummin It

P.S. Karina plays with her own band 2nd Sundays at the Rite Spot Cafe, and all this ’90s talk is making me want to cruise down San Pablo bumping “Give ‘em the Boot Vol. 1″.
